CHILDHOOD CANCER: WILM’S TUMOURS
PRESENTER: Prof Janet Poole.

During 2022 CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA will host a series of CPD accredited webinars on childhood cancers to increase disease knowledge of Healthcare Professionals and in doing so reduce the mortality and morbidity of children with cancer.

Wilm’s tumour is one of the types of embryonal tumours that account for 14% (in South Africa) of all childhood cancers. Wilm’s tumour affects the kidney and accounts for 10% of all embryonal tumours of note are that it is hardly seen in Japan! It is quite different from the cancers that affect the kidneys of adults. Most patients are under 5 years old and usually only one kidney is affected; it is very rare that both kidneys are affected. In South Africa, many of our children are diagnosed too late to effect the good prognosis that this cancer carries.
