My son and I enjoy playing chess and after 8 long years since I started teaching him, he won his 1st game against me today and the satisfaction of perseverance and trying again, over and over has resulted in a very proud and pleased young man🙋.

He had to go through a lot of learning through losing but practice made him perfect his game enough to finally take the win🥇. It made me think of how similar my journey is with my clients - some progress quick but others may take longer to reach their goals, and that's ok. As long as you are always making progress, stay disciplined and enjoy every moment you will get to the finish line.🏆

UPPER BODY💪🏻

Equipment needed:

✅ exercise mat
✅ resistance band
✅ set of dumbbells

3 sets of 8-12 repetitions of each exercise depending on fitness level😉

Workout:

1. Basic press ups⬇️
On your knees first to perfect the technique of keeping your body flat and straight and going all the way down with you chest. Always look up. Progress to lifting the knees of the ground and do exactly the same movements.

2. Resistance band upper back⬇️
Keep your arms straight at all times. Shoulder joints in a neutral position by squeezing the shoulder blades together. Pull back and hold a second before slowly releasing to the front.

3. Bicep curls

4. Resistance band overhead extension

5. Crunches⬇️
Crunches show the 3 different arm positions to make the exercise easy, medium or hard. Across chest easy and arms over head is hard.

Remember to do dynamic stretches before your workouts and static stretches after. Always!💯

Being new to a gym can seem daunting👀, so lets make it easier for you.

1. Know your goal🤝
Whether it’s fat loss, an increase in strength or to smash out a 10-rep set of push-ups, having a goal to work towards will keep you committed to your new gym membership, and will also determine how your workouts are structured. Goals can – and will – change over time, but try to have both long-term (manage 100kg deadlifts, for example) and short-term (such as a marginal increase in sprint speed) aims in mind.

2. Arrive with a plan🗒
Even after you're comfortable in the gym, you should always arrive with a workout in mind. Why? Because it’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed by an abundance of equipment leaving you sure of where to start, and perhaps not starting at all. It’s also worth having a few body weight moves in your back pocket too, for when the squat racks are occupied and the lass using the lat machine just won’t let up.

3. Schedule your workout wisely🧐
Ever find yourself feeling flustered when the gym is overflowing and the dumbbell racks are all but empty? Instead of rushing or – let’s be honest – altogether skipping your workout, try to suss when your new gym is at its most quiet. It’ll largely depend on its location, but on the whole, gyms tend to be busy before work (say, 6-9am), during lunch hours (12-2pm-ish) and for a few hours post-work (4.30-6.30pm, or thereabouts). And if you prefer to sweat in your own space see if you can sync your schedule to the class timetable, so you can workout – alone – in the studio.

1. Take It Easy😌
Think of your resolution as a lifelong commitment to a healthier lifestyle. You are much more likely to be successful if you take it easy at the beginning. For instance, you may see people exercising at a very high intensity, but you should start with low-to-moderate intensity workouts. You may know people who train six days a week, but it's fine to start with three. You may see people engage in a diverse array of physical activities, but a 15-minute walk three days a week is a great place to begin.

2. Be Realistic🧏‍♀️
One of the biggest problems with New Year's resolutions is they can be extremely impractical. Setting goals is a great idea, but make sure they are realistic and feasible.

3. Create a Plan🗒
Before you start your exercise program, answer three questions. First, when will you exercise? Identify three days and times that are convenient for you and stick with those days so you are working out at the same time each week. Second, what type of exercise will you do? The best type of exercise is one you enjoy. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing; pick an exercise that works for you. Choose from activities such as walking, cycling, running, swimming, weightlifting, skating, dancing, golf, handball, tennis and basketball. Third, how much time will you spend exercising? Start with as little as 10 minutes per session and slowly build up to at least 30 minutes per workout.

Men and women of all ages can benefit from strength training, but get a doctor’s OK before beginning, especially if you haven’t exercised in a while🧏. Two or three 20- or 30-minute strength training sessions every week can result in significant health benefits:
1. Increased muscle mass💪
Muscle mass naturally decreases with age, but strength training can help reverse the trend.

2. Stronger bones🦵
Strength training increases bone density and reduces the risk of fractures.

1. Make it social🙋
If you’re with friends or family, see if anyone wants to join you for a jog or light workout. Keep the intensity easy and the tone fun. That way you can enjoy yourselves, but still keep fit.

2. Cut it short⏰
If you don’t have time for a full workout, don’t throw in the towel completely. Catch a workout that works around your schedule.

3. Focus on maintaining🤝
It’s OK to refocus the goal to simply enjoyment. Workout for the sake of moving your body and to maintain your base, not necessarily to improve.
