I am honoured to have been invited by Genius Premium Tuition to lead a professional development workshop for their instructors on the newly developed workbook, DBT Skills for Academic Success: Tools for Teens.

The session will take place on Monday afternoon, 25 May 2026, at their Cape Town office. We will explore practical, teen-friendly tools in Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance to support 13–18-year-olds with focus, exam anxiety, procrastination, perfectionism, and motivation — all within academic coaching sessions.

This 23-page resource provides practical, age-appropriate tools specifically designed and written for Genius Premium Tuition academic coaching sessions. It equips 13–18 year olds with skills to enhance focus, manage exam anxiety and procrastination, address perfectionism, and build emotional resilience — all within a supportive, non-clinical framework.

A sincere thank you to the Genius Premium Tuition team for this wonderful opportunity.

🌱 Ready to Build a Life Worth Living? Join DBT Thrive – In Person at Glenbrook Practice!
Starting 07 July, an engaging eight-week DBT skills-based programme designed specifically for adults.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), developed by Dr Marsha Linehan, offers a proven set of practical skills to help you reduce suffering, increase your sense of control, and create a life that feels truly worth living. This in-person group programme combines structured skills training, guided practice, and supportive discussion in a safe, validating environment – no prior experience is required.

The Four Core DBT Modules You’ll Master:
🧘 MindfulnessMindfulness is the foundation of all DBT skills. These skills teach you to observe and describe your experiences in the present moment without judgment, to participate fully, and to do so one-mindfully and effectively. Practising mindfulness helps you access Wise Mind, the balanced synthesis of your emotional mind and reasonable mind, so you can respond to life’s challenges with greater awareness and intention rather than reacting on autopilot. In sessions, you will engage in guided practices that quiet the racing mind and reduce unnecessary suffering.
❤️ Emotional RegulationEmotion Regulation skills help you understand your emotions and learn how to influence their intensity and duration. In this module, you will learn to accurately identify and label emotions, reduce your vulnerability to negative emotions, increase positive emotional experiences, and change painful emotions when needed, using skills such as opposite action. These skills help you manage intense moods more effectively and build greater emotional balance in daily life.
🛡️ Distress ToleranceDistress Tolerance skills teach you how to survive crises and tolerate intense emotional pain without making the situation worse. You will learn crisis survival strategies to endure difficult moments and reality-acceptance skills to make peace with things that cannot be changed right away. The goal is to develop the ability to tolerate distress skillfully so you can move toward effective change when possible and avoid impulsive actions that create additional suffering.
🤝 Interpersonal EffectivenessInterpersonal Effectiveness skills help you communicate your needs effectively while building and maintaining healthy relationships and preserving your self-respect. You will practice specific strategies for asking for what you want, saying no when necessary, and resolving conflicts in ways that strengthen your connections with others. These tools help you navigate relationships more successfully and create the kind of connections essential to a life worth living.

🎉 Congratulations to Our Incredible DBT Step-Upp Graduates! 🎉 We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate this wonderful group of teens who have completed our skills-based 12-week DBT Step-Upp Programme for Teens right here in Cape Town

Over the past three months, you have developed and practised a powerful toolkit drawn from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), created by Dr Marsha Linehan

🎯Mindfulness – learning to find your “Wise Mind,” stay present, and build greater self-awareness
🎯Distress Tolerance – developing healthy ways to survive crises and tolerate intense emotions without making things worse
🎯Emotion Regulation – understanding, labelling, and effectively managing strong feelings
🎯Interpersonal Effectiveness – communicating your needs clearly, maintaining relationships, and keeping your self-respect

You’ve also worked through our unique Life Navigation Skills module, giving you practical tools for goal-setting, problem-solving, decision-making, and navigating the everyday challenges of school, friendships, family, and the journey into young adulthood.

These skills are not just for the classroom or group sessions; they are life skills that will continue to support your resilience, emotional balance, confidence, and relationships long after the programme ends. You have every reason to feel proud of how far you’ve come.

A huge well done to every single graduate! Your growth, courage, and commitment have been truly inspiring. We also want to thank your parents and families for their ongoing support; it truly does take a village.

Cultivating Wise Mind: The DBT Mindfulness Skill That Integrates Reason and Emotion
In Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Wise Mind stands as one of the foundational mindfulness skills that empowers us to navigate life’s challenges with balance, clarity, and effectiveness. Rather than swinging between the extremes of pure logic or overwhelming emotion, Wise Mind invites us to access the skilful synthesis of our Rational Mind and Emotional Mind; the place where clear thinking and emotional wisdom naturally meet.
This integration isn’t about choosing one over the other. It’s about creating a healthy overlap that honours both.

In Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), one of the core mindfulness skills is learning to be present with your emotions 🧘‍♀️ ; observing them with curiosity and without judgment. This practice forms the foundation for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and lasting personal growth 🌱.

Our latest infographic, How to Be Present with Your Feelings, provides a clear, practical guide to applying these DBT principles in everyday moments. Each strategy invites gentle self-awareness and compassionate inquiry 💖, helping you respond to difficult emotions with greater skill and kindness.
