DBT Modules: Benefits for Teens
DBT helps teens (13-18) build resilience, manage stress, and handle challenges like academics, social dynamics, family expectations, and goals. STEP-UPP at Glenbrook Practice covers four modules:
Mindfulness
It teaches staying present and observing emotions without judgment via skills like mindful breathing. Benefits: Calms the mind, boosts focus, reduces being overwhelmed by stressors, and prevents impulsivity.
Distress Tolerance
Strategies like distraction and radical acceptance can help cope with crises without harm. Benefits: They build resilience during setbacks, avoid despair, and maintain stability in tough times.
Emotion Regulation
Tools to identify triggers, label emotions, and adjust responses (e.g., opposite action). Benefits: Achieves emotional balance and self-control, reduces reactivity, and prevents spirals.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Communication skills like DEAR MAN (assertiveness) and GIVE (relationships) strengthen bonds, reduce conflict, and boost confidence in social and family interactions.
