Optometrist Catherine Rosewall-McCarthy has honed the skill of testing really young children, including toddlers and babies. This requires special tests and diagnostics. Another field of focus is Keratoconus, a slow, progressive eye disease which may ultimately result in a cornea transplant. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗲?
A stye is a red, tender bump that appears on the eyelid when bacteria infect an eyelash follicle or oil gland.

Common causes and risk factors include:
- Touching or rubbing your eyes: Hands carry bacteria that can transfer to your eyes, increasing the risk of infection.
- Expired or shared eye makeup: Mascara and other products easily collect bacteria, especially when old or shared.
- Contaminated contact lenses: Using unclean lenses or touching them with unwashed hands exposes eyes to bacteria.
- Poor hygiene: Failing to wash your face and eyelids daily can contribute to recurring styes.
- Sleeping with makeup on: Encourages bacterial growth and clogs pores around the eyes.
- Blepharitis: Chronic eyelid inflammation can trigger bacterial infections and styes.
- Skin conditions: Issues like ocular rosacea can make eyelids more prone to styes.

World Retina Week is commemorated from 22 – 28 September to raise awareness on Retinitis Pigmentosa [RP], Macular Degeneration [MD] and Usher Syndrome [US] as the most common retinal degenerative diseases which affect hundreds of thousands of South Africans and millions worldwide.

Retinal degeneration affects people from all racial and socio-economic groups. Did you know? 2,7% of our population have a disability, and visual disability is the largest group.

Many systemic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, HIV, Arthritis, to name a few, can affect the health of your retina. If you have any health conditions, get regular eye checks, at a minimum annually. At Rosewall-McCarthy Optometrists we take eye photos and eye scans to assess retina health.
