World Hemophilia Day is observed annually on April 17 to raise global awareness for hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders. Started in 1989 by the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) to honor founder Frank Schnabel’s birthday, the day advocates for improved diagnosis and access to care.

What is Hemophilia?
Types: Hemophilia A (factor VIII deficiency) and B (factor IX deficiency) are the most common, primarily affecting males, while females can be carriers.

Symptoms: Frequent, large bruises; nosebleeds; and spontaneous bleeding in joints and muscles.

Management: Treatment involves replacing the missing clotting factor via injections.

Breast Cancer Facts: Empowering You to Act:

• Early Detection Saves Lives: When breast cancer is detected at a localized stage, the chance of successful treatment and long-term survival is up to 95%. Early action is your best defense!

• Most Common Cancer: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among South African women, underscoring the importance of personal awareness.

• Your Primary Screening Tool: As South Africa does not have a national mammogram screening programme, the Monthly Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is a vital, free, and accessible tool recommended by the Department of Health.

• Know Your Timing: If you are still menstruating, perform your BSE 3 to 5 days after your period starts when breasts are least swollen. If you are post-menopausal, choose an easy-to-remember day (like the 1st of every month).

• Look Beyond the Lump: While a lump is the most common sign, always check for subtle changes like dimpling, puckering, redness, warmth, or unusual ni**le discharge. If you notice any change, see your doctor or clinic immediately.

• Positive Progress: Thanks to awareness efforts, the percentage of patients being diagnosed with early-stage disease (Stage I or II) in many South African clinics has doubled over the past two decades. We are making progress!

• Reduce Your Risk: You can proactively lower your risk! Lifestyle choices such as maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and limiting alcohol consumption play a significant role in prevention.
