Caitlyn Waters OT

Caitlyn Waters OT Hi there, I'm Cait! I have been working as an Occupational Therapist since 2010.

I have a special interest in Paediatric and Adult Neurological Conditions, Cortical Visual Impairment, Developmental Delays, and Wheelchair & Seating Assessments.

๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿงก One of my favourite activities ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Works on fine motor AND visual perceptual skills - particularly if copying a 2D pattern from the manual!

But also allows for lovely open ended play and encourages creativity!

This little boy has dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy (often referred to as CP). This means he has fluctuating muscle tone, and that he has an excess of movement.

Although he is an absolute MACHINE in floor mobility (rolling, creeping and transitioning into low kneeling independently), he is not able to walk independently, and is therefore pushed by an adult in a manual wheelchair.

I am hopeful that we can teach this incredibly motivated dude to operate his own motorized wheelchair!! So we have started playing computer games- using a joystick in place of a mouse - as these are the same joysticks used to operate a motorized wheelchair.

With extensive practice, I am hoping he will learn to control a joystick safely and intentionally.

So.. WATCH THIS SPACE! Because this little guy is going places ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ˜

I have a lot of new followers - plus I don't think I've ever actually introduced myself on this platform - so here goes...

My name is Caitlyn Waters. But everyone knows me as Cait (or my isiZulu name, Ketiwe ๐Ÿ˜‹). I am a mom to a 5 year old boy who is my absolute everything.

I am an Occupational Therapist with a special interest in Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT) and Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI).

I worked in public hospital settings (including NICUs and a specialized spinal rehabilitation facility) for a total of 13 years.

And now - for the past 2.5 years - I have been working at a special needs school which caters for children with Autism (ASD), medical conditions such as Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Epilepsy, and children with ADHD and/or learning difficulties who require a long-term remedial school setting.

I absolutely LOVE my job. Honestly, it fulls my cup on a daily basis. And I am so very grateful to work with an incredible multi-disciplinary team of therapists!

I called my page "Shine" for two reasons:

1. That is my goal. To help each child reach their full potential and shine in their daily lives.

and 2. Because of the quote from C.S. Lewis which states "Don't shine so that others can see you. Shine so that through you, others can see Him".

In honor of World OT Day, I thought I'd post a short video about some of the amazing assistive devices we have in our department at

1. A reader pen. This little device is such a winner for children who have significant reading challenges. You use the pen to highlight a portion of text, and it will then read it out to you.

2. Different joysticks. Many children with complex physical impairments affecting both their arms and legs require motorized wheelchairs. These wheelchairs are operated by using a joystick.
Having different types of joysticks available in our department- as well as a computer program called "look to learn" which has fun, graded games for children to learn cursor control- allows us to teach children the skills required to operate joysticks with precision (so they don't injure themselves or others when "driving" along the corridors or in the classroom).

3. Adapted keyboards. These are great for children with low vision who are learning to type on a computer. The larger keys with high contrast colours, allows children to see the letters / numbers / symbols on each key more easily.

There are many more types of assistive devices out there which can help your child to navigate their environment/ school work more easily! Chat to an OT about what options may be available for your child.
