Today, a couple of us learnt how to use K Tape (kinesiology tape) to help with areas like drooling, facial palsy, muscle pain (like TMJ pain), open mouth posture, voice difficulties, swallowing difficulties...the list goes on. The only challenge we experienced is not laughing while practicing taping each other. 😂

What a lovely tool, to supplement our recent training on oromyofunctional disorders.

- Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a rare genetic disorder that causes physical, cognitive and behavioral differences.
- CdLS is a very rare condition that’s present at birth. The disorder occurs in 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 50,000. (US stats)
- it is characterized by distinctive craniofacial features, neurodevelopmental features (including developmental delays) and brain differences similar to ASD/ADHD
- CdLS can also cause slow growth before and after birth, which can lead to short stature.
- speech therapy can help with communication and feeding delays that may arise.
- expressive communication skills (ability to express oneself) are significantly more impaired than receptive language skills.
- Although children with CdLS may have difficulties with verbal communication, research has shown that individuals with Cornelia de Lange syndrome often use a number of non-verbal strategies to communicate.
- Speech difficulties in CdLS often occur due to abnormal muscle tone.AAC can support achieve more effective communication.

This was by far the most fun, embarrassing, exhausting team building! 🤣 We laughed hysterically, perservered effortfully, and are now completely shattered. It's settled, speech therapists are not the fittest lot!

Last week, our staff team took half a week off to learn more about oromyofunctional disorders. It was such an amazing time of growth and discovery. We are proud to say that we now offer oromyofunctional therapy. More posts to follow.
