One-third or more of adults aged 65 and up suffer from age-related hearing loss. Because this type of hearing loss develops gradually, many people are unaware of it until it becomes a serious problem. This often causes a great deal of frustration and strain on the affected person.

Hearing aids relieve the strain of hearing. With the newer digital technology available, hearing aids also offer more sound clarity than ever before.

If you work in a busy environment with a lot of background noise, you might prefer a device that reduces it while still allowing you to hear the person you're talking to

⦁ Wear your hearing aids daily, for a minimum of 10 to 12 hours.
⦁ Every night, open the battery door of your hearing aids to allow the device to breathe and extend the life of the batteries.
⦁ Clean your hearing aids each morning with a soft cloth, wiping the microphone and receiver (speaker).
⦁ Always keep spare batteries on hand.
⦁ If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch with your local audiologist to assist.

Levels Of Hearing Loss: Severe

This is the most severe and significant level of hearing loss. People with this level of hearing loss are unable to hear anything below 90-120 dB. For those who have severe hearing loss, hearing aids are virtually ineffective. Even the sound of an aeroplane engine or a fire alarm can be difficult to hear for those with profound hearing loss.

People with this level must rely on lip-reading, gestures, or other visual cues to communicate. Some people will choose to communicate using sign language.

One of the best solutions to profound hearing loss is a cochlear implant, which can help an individual hear and understand speech after surgery and with rehabilitation.

Adults should have their hearing screened at least once every year. More frequent screenings are necessary if there is job exposure to noise (construction, factories, manufacturing, bars), noisy hobbies (working with power tools or motors). Even if protective devices are worn at work, hearing should be checked annually.

Musicians should also have annual hearing screenings up to age 50.

At Hearing Aid Labs, we offer free screen tests at all of our branches

Yoga improves flexibility and muscle tone, but it may also help some people with hearing loss and tinnitus. Yoga improves hearing by increasing circulation to the ears, which helps nerve function, and relaxing muscles, especially in the neck.

While not everyone will experience improved hearing with yoga, below are six poses to try and see what works for you:

A focus on Sensorineural Hearing Loss:

Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, happens after inner ear damage. Problems with the nerve pathways from your inner ear to your brain can also cause SNHL. As a result, soft sounds may be hard to hear. Even louder sounds may be unclear or may sound muffled.

This is the most common type of permanent hearing loss. It can be hereditary or caused by old age. It can also be caused by a loud noise/explosion or blow to the head. Most of the time, medicine or surgery cannot fix SNHL. However, hearing aids may help you hear.

the "Speech Banana" is a useful visual tool for describing where the sounds used in everyday human speech occur. Commonly used parts of speech and letters are mapped out on a graph according to their frequency when spoken.

This graph can help understand the high frequency (4000 Hz and up) sounds in our everyday speech, such as "f", "th", and "s". To increase overall understanding, high-frequency words and sounds should be substituted for easier to understand low-frequency words and sounds.

How do I know if my hearing aid batteries need changing?

Depending on how often you use your hearing aids, You should change your hearing aid batteries if either of these occurs:

⦁ Sound becomes distorted, or you have to turn up the volume on your hearing aid more than usual.
⦁ The "low-battery" beep or voice sound comes on, indicating that the battery is getting low and should be changed.

A focus on Conductive hearing loss:

Your ear comprises three parts— the outer, the middle, and the inner ear. A conductive hearing loss happens when sounds cannot get through the outer and middle ear. As a result, it may be hard to hear soft sounds. Louder sounds may be muffled.

Often caused by a problem with the middle ear – whether fluid from allergies, ear infection or something more severe like a benign tumour causing a blockage. Sometimes it is caused by a birth defect where the ear or parts of it are not properly formed.
Medicine or surgery can often fix this type of hearing loss.
