📒 Book Review: Good Inside by Dr Becky Kennedy

🧡 This book emphasises parenting with empathy and connection as the central themes.

✨ It uses the premise that all children are 'good inside'.

💥Rather than punishing behaviours you are probed to question the underlying feeling or reason behind the behaviour. Through addressing the underlying reason you can ultimately develop your relationship with your child, improve their self-regulation abilities, enhance problem solving skills and foster their self-esteem.

👏This approach ultimately results in children who are more empathetic, regulated and resilient.

🌟 My wish would be that not only parents, but also teachers shifted their thinking to this approach. Our schools would be happier places for all.

🥇If you are going to only read one book about parenting, I truly feel this should be it. It is such a game changer.

I listened to the audio version read by the author on Audible. You can also buy it locally through Takealot.com.

A Speech Therapist's Review of:
💫 The Whole Brain Child &
💫 No Drama Discipline
🖊️ by Daniel Siegel and Tina Bryson

✨ As a Speech Therapist and mum, I know that the area of 'discipline' is not an easy one to navigate. After reading reviews of MANY books, these two consistently came up as highly recommended by both parents and professionals. I bought hard copies of these books, but ended up listening to the audio book versions of them on Audible (much easier for a multitasking parent!).

The 'The Whole Brain Child' and 'No Drama Discipline' by Daniel Siegel and Tina Bryson approach discipline from a neuro developmental perspective that just makes sense. They present the neuroscience in an easy to understand way and give lots of practical examples.

I feel every parent, therapist and teacher should dive into these reads.

📚 'The Whole Brain Child' offers a revolutionary approach to child development, explaining how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures. Siegel introduces 12 key strategies that foster healthy brain development, leading to calmer, happier, and more resilient children. It's not just a book; it's a journey into understanding your child's inner world, making it a must-read for anyone keen on nurturing a child's emotional intelligence and coping skills.

📚 'No Drama Discipline' builds on these insights, focusing on the best ways to discipline children. Forget about time-outs and power struggles; this book teaches us how to reach our children, redirect emotions, and turn a meltdown into an opportunity for growth. The emphasis on connection before correction has transformed how I approach challenging behaviors, both professionally and personally.

💚 Whether you're navigating the tantrums of a two-year-old or the emotional storms of a teenager, the wisdom offered in these books offers a path to deeper connections and more harmonious relationships. These strategies can be easily applied both at home and in the classroom. I would especially LOVE to see these strategies applied in schools.

🩵 Have you read these books?

2023 ‐ Happy New Year!

I can only hope we are all stepping into the new year with the same enthusiasm and energy as a toddler running away from their mum ✨️.

I'm not big into resolutions, but at the start of each year, I always like to have a few goals 🦋.

On a work front, I'd love to move into seeing even more kiddies in the early childhood intervention space and supporting parents during this crucial period 🙌.

Personally, I would love to grow our family. Fingers crossed this happens for us 🤞. Mostly I'm going to be working on giving myself more grace as I navigate this busy season 🙏.

🎄 Merry Christmas! 🎄

It's a day late because I was offline and soaking in the special day with family. After a few quieter Christmases, it was just such a treat to be together again. Wishing everyone a blessed holiday season ✨️

TOP 5 TIPS TO GET ANY TODDLER TO LOVE BOOKS

📚 We all know the importance of book reading, but what do you do if you toddler/child just doesn't want to read?

🥰 This post is for all the parents out there, battling with this.

💛 PLEASE SAVE IT FOR LATER

🧡 COMMENT BELOW IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR TIPS THAT WORK FOR YOU.

❤️ HAPPY READING!

WHEN TO TEST YOUR CHILD’S HEARING?

💛 Your child's hearing should be screened in the hospital shortly after birth or within the first 6 weeks of life.

💛 After that, ANNUAL hearing screening is recommended up until Grade 3.

💛 More frequent testing may be recommended in specific cases.

WHY SHOULD I TEST? MY CHILD IS HEARING FINE?

🧡 Even if your child appears to be hearing, it is important to test their hearing.

🧡 It will help pick up any mild hearing loss and can help detect fluid or infections in the middle ear.

🧡 Some children also have mild hearing losses in a single ear and this can often go undetected till they start school and may experience some difficulties in the classroom environment.

WHO CAN TEST MY CHILD’S HEARING?

❤️ Audiologists, speech therapists, specially trained nurses and ENTs who have the relevant equipment are able to do hearing screenings. This is a pass/fail evaluation that picks up if your child needs an in-depth hearing test.

❤️ Hearing screenings are also often conducted in preschools and schools, with a parent’s consent.

❤️ Audiologists are the only people able to conduct diagnostic hearing tests in South Africa.

🔥 NOTE: Hearing Aid Acousticians (often found in malls) are not permitted to test hearing in under 12s.

❤️ In private practice, your best bet will be to take your child to a reputable audiologist for a hearing screening or test.

🌟 IF YOUR CHILD HAS SPEECH AND/OR LANGUAGE DELAYS 🌟 it is especially important to start with a hearing screening or test. Doctors (and sometimes therapists) forget to remind their patients to do this, so please be your child’s advocate.
