Dr M Mathir

Dr M Mathir Your family's partner in physical and mental wellness, proudly serving Glenwood, Durban. I believe that a family practice should be a warm and inviting place.

A space where the warmth of myself, my staff, and the gorgeous surroundings offers mental and physical healing. Before our consultation, you can grab a cup of coffee and sit in the garden. Your teens can ask for the WIFI password and your kids can play with puzzles or blocks. We practice evidence-based medicine, but with an emphasis on patient autonomy. Together we discuss and plan your next steps, prioritizing your needs (and your budget) and explaining how prevention now will also pave the way for good health in the future.

Most women wait for their periods to stop before they seek help. But the "hormonal chaos" actually starts years (sometimes a decade) before your final cycle ⏳

If you're not sure where you fit into this timeline, but something feels different, a simple hormone balance consult may be helpful.

Obesity is officially recognised by the WHO (ICD-11) as a chronic, complex disease. It is not a moral failing or a lack of willpower, yet the stigma surrounding it continues to drive physiological stress and comes between obese individuals and essential medical care.

At Dr. Mathir & Associates, we provide a safe, clinical space to manage your health effectively.

When we discuss fertility, we cannot ignore the metabolic foundation it sits upon. Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS)is one of the most common hormonal disorders affecting reproductive-aged women, yet it is often misunderstood as solely an ovarian issue.

Actually, PCOS is a complex interaction between your hormones and your metabolic health. Insulin Resistance, can disrupt the delicate hormonal signals required for regular ovulation.

Key Factors:
🍇 Beyond Ovaries: Fertility is a reflection of the continuous relationship between your current hormonal status, your metabolic function, and your daily lifestyle habits.
🍇 Insulin: High insulin levels can cause the ovaries to produce excess androgens, which directly hinders fertility.
🍇 Management: Addressing reproductive health requires a systematic approach to metabolic health to restore hormonal balance.

Understanding these links is the first step toward reclaiming your reproductive health 💭

I don't think I've shared this but I'm a big fan of cooking and hosting in my home 🩷 I also love experimenting with different spices and flavours to change things up with our ramadhaan savouries every year. I've decided to share a few of my own recipes- inspired by my years in the kitchen 😅

Recipe:
500g chicken
1 tsp ground garlic
1 tsp Sujees homemade green masala (optional)
1/2 tsp salt (the sauce and cheese add the rest but taste and add as needed)
2 tsp ina-paarmans garlic and herb spice
creamy jalapeño sauce (I use cape recipe) to taste
Handful of gouda or cheddar cheese when mixture is cool
Fill and freeze your springrolls

Can fry or brush with oil and air-fry.
Enjoy 🩷

The conversation around GLP-1 therapy is changing. 🔄
A year ago, the most common question I heard was "How do I start?" Today, as many GLP-1-users start to reach their goals, the focus has shifted to the most important phase: "How do I maintain this, and can I eventually come off?"

In my practice, we don't just view these medications as a "quick fix" for the scale. We see them as a tool to improve biology (like reducing visceral fat) or managing the metabolic shifts that happen during perimenopause. ⚖️

But what happens when you’ve reached your goal?

Maintenance should be a strategic transition. For many, weaning off is possible when we focus on:
• Metabolic Support: Protecting your basal metabolic rate. 📈
• Muscle Preservation: Keeping the "engine" running through resistance training. 💪
• Hormonal Balance: Addressing the unique shifts that GLP-1s helped stabilise.

The goal is to ensure that when the medication is reduced or stopped, your body’s internal signals are ready to take back the wheel. 🧠🩺

If you missed it, I recently shared two reels diving deeper into chronic use VS weaning off - be sure to check those out!
