A small change making a big difference, the NSRI is introducing compact new tractors to tow JetRIBs, easing the load on crews and boosting efficiency on the sand. With better traction, lower maintenance, and diesel-powered reliability, these tractors are set to become essential gear at stations nationwide. 🚜🌊

What began as a calm fishing trip in early May turned into a life-or-death struggle for Durban paddlers Ameer and Ahmed. Separated by fatigue and swept by wind, one made the toughest call, to leave his friend and get help. Thanks to NSRI Durban and the quick-thinking crew of Medavu SA, both men were rescued and reunited. Their story is a powerful reminder of courage, community and the lifesaving value of being prepared. 🛶🌊

May Day… mayday mayday.
We thought it would be a significant day to remind ourselves what to do if the ‘pawpaw’ hits the fan.

As a number of our local yachties are eyeing out the horizon, preparing for the more competitive blue ocean racing, and with a few close calls in recent times by our community, shared on the Durban Keeler group, we reached out to our local NSRI and asked them for a brief list of what to do in the case…

Chatting to experienced sailor and Coxswain at NSRI, Jacques Kruger shared, ‘The obvious ones, check the weather conditions and be sensible!’

‘And plan!’

The N.S.R.I list that Jacques shared with us:

In an emergency:
1. Remain calm
2. Assess the situation
3. Look after any injured or hypothermic crew
How to get rescued:
1. Download the RSA SAFTRX App (live tracking and S.O.S. feature to activate the nearest station.)
2. Have our emergency operations centre number in your phone.
3. Call Durban radio on vhf 16/ local port control
4. Tell someone where you are going, location and estimated time back at the port or slip.

Emergency Operations Centre Contact: 087 094 9774
National: 112

***And make sure all of your crew is familiar with the Mayday procedure, have the card laminated and secured above your nav station, and walk them through it – often.***

If you are able to, please spare a few extra rands to help keep them afloat, so they can keep us afloat!

Rescue 5A out on a training run.

This is our 8.8 meter Class 3 boat.
Arguably the most versatile boat on station.
From surf to offshore operations, she gets the job done.

It takes years of dedication to Coxswain this vessel, with most crew taking at least 5 years to qualify for assesment.

It was a weekend of camaraderie, support, encouragement and LOTS of time in the ocean, and it was a real privilege to spend time with all these amazing people.
