The Children's Cardiac Foundation of Africa is reliant on the goodwill and generosity of donors in order to effect much needed treatment to its patients.

Approximately 1% of babies are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD), affecting about 1.3 million children globally each year.

While most children with non-critical CHDs survive to adulthood, many will require interventions like surgery within their first year.

CHD is a leading cause of death from birth defects and can lead to lifelong health challenges.

As we enter the second half of the year we celebrate the lives of the children we have been able to save at the Children's Cardiac Foundation of Africa. We also note that there are thousands of children suffering from congenital heart disease that need help.

Currently, there are only 22 cardiac centres in Africa performing an average of 18 open heart surgeries per million people, compared with 169 per million people worldwide.

Without proper medical treatment, approximately one-third of the children born with moderate and severe CHD will not survive beyond the neonatal period, and half will die in early infancy.

The Children's Cardiac Foundation of Africa is committed to performing life saving procedures on children.

The Children’s Cardiac Foundation of Africa (TCCFA), based at Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre, marked World Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Week on February 14, with a heartfelt reflection on the lives saved and the urgent need to help the many children still awaiting life-saving surgery.

The event was not just a celebration but a reminder of the thousands of children who are born with CHD each year—many of whom will not survive without timely surgical intervention.

The Children's Cardiac Foundation of Africa marks a significant milestone with 100 life-saving surgeries, yet over 500 children in KwaZulu-Natal still await crucial heart operations.

While Valentines Day was being celebrated this week, at the same time we honoured Hearts for different reasons.

This week we celebrated Congenital Heart Disease Week at Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre which also hosts the Children's Cardiac Foundation of Africa.

Each year, the week of February 7-14 is celebrated as “Congenital Heart
Disease Awareness Week”.

Congenital Heart Disease is the lifelong complications of being born with heart problems.

During this week, children and adults living with congenital heart disease (CHD)
are honoured and encouraged to share their stories.

Even though having a CHD can be hard sometimes, this week we are excited to celebrate how far we’ve
come!

Thank you to our incredible donors without whom we cannot perform life saving heart procedures on children from around the continent.
