PCOS, short for Polycystic O***y Syndrome, is often seen as an enigmatic illness, a cloud of uncertainty that hangs over a woman's health, affecting as many as one in ten women of reproductive age. It's a common endocrine disorder, but is it toothless? Far from it. Emanating from an imbalance in reproductive hormones, PCOS creates problems in the ovaries, the organs that produce eggs to be fertilized each month as part of a healthy menstrual cycle....

How and why you need a birth plan...

A birth plan is a record of what you would like to happen to you during and shortly after your labour. It helps guide Dr Goldman about what your needs and choices are during your labour and lets you focus on your delivery.

A birth plan could include things like:
1. Delivery method - caesarean vs normal
2. Who's allowed in the room with you?
3. What will you be using for pain relief?
4. Special requests? like music or a prayer
5. Are you planning to breastfeed?
6. Who is cutting babies cord?

Having a birth plan reduces the stress of labour. Talk to Dr Goldman at your next visit and lets get prepared to welcome your baby!

When should I be feeling my baby move for the first time?

Your baby starts to move as early as 12 weeks but you won't be able to feel this.

If you have had pregnancies before you can start feeling movements as early as 16 weeks but if this is your first pregnancy you may not feel movements until 20 weeks.

Remember these movements are not like the kicks you will be feeling later on in pregnancy. Most of my patients describe it was a worm or snake moving or a vibration in their lower abdomen.

Healthy babies move! So get used to your babies rhythm and know that your little one is happy and healthy

Contraception has become a confusing topic for many women. Many myths are spread regarding the various options....let's debunk a few!

1. Contraception makes you gain weight.
This is by far the most common myth I've heard in practice. There is no evidence to support this. Most women use contraception when they are going through changes in their body that naturally cause weight gain eg puberty and therefore it might not be due to your contraceptive. Depo Provera (3 month injection) might cause increased appetite leading to weight gain.

2. Contraception causes cancer
There is no link to contraception and cancer. Contrary to this some contraceptives have been shown to reduce your risk of ovarian and uterine cancers.

3. I don't need contraception if I'm not having s*x
Contraception can be used for other reasons besides pregnancy prevention such as acne, period pain and heavy periods.

4. I can't remember to take contraception so there's none available for someone like me.
Nowadays the options available are vast. Long term options such as the patch, IUD and ring are all good options for women who cannot take a tablet daily.

Contraception is not one size fits all. Lets discuss which option will suit your lifestyle - Book an appointment now with Dr Goldman

When should you have your first Pap smear?
You should start visiting a gynaecologist and having a Pap smear from the age of 25

What happens if my Pap smear is abnormal?
An abnormal Pap smear does not mean that you have cancer. Your cervix will be evaluated by your gynaecologist by doing a procedure called colposcopy (having a close look at the cervix)

What can I do to prevent cervical cancer?
All girls aged 11 to 12 should receive the HPV vaccine. This will stop the virus that causes most cervical cancers. This vaccine can still be given up to the age of 26 if you haven't received it yet.

Cervical cancer can be prevented through a combination of Pap smears and vaccines. Book your appointment today with Dr G Goldman

Exercise in pregnancy is safe for you and your developing baby but there are certain conditions that could make it dangerous for your pregnancy.

Book an appointment today with Dr Goldman today to discuss whether exercising in pregnancy is right for you.
