TB Awareness Month is designed to build public awareness that tuberculosis (TB) remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of several million people each year, mostly in the third world.

TB Day on 24 March commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. At the time of Koch's announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through Europe and the Americas, causing the death of one out of every seven people. Koch's discovery opened the way toward diagnosing and curing tuberculosis.

TB is still a major problem in South Africa, but it can be cured, provided you get treatment.

The Department of Health is serious about improving the health of women. Health campaigns, free services and vaccinations such as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination all form part of our efforts to improve the health of all women

HPV is the virus that causes cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women after breast cancer. Over 99% of all cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection of high-risk types of HPV.

The vaccination protects girls from being infected by HPV and reduces the risk of developing HPV related cervical cancer later in life. The younger your daughter is, the better her body’s immune system can respond to the vaccine, resulting in the production of protective antibodies against the virus.

Pregnant women should start attending antenatal care as soon as they suspect that they are pregnant and certainly within their first trimester.
Early antenatal care attendance provides:
the opportunity to exclude and manage existing medical conditions which can be aggravated by the pregnancy, such as hypertension, diabetes, infections and anaemia
free HIV testing and voluntary counselling (VCT)
early recognition of danger signs in pregnancy and post delivery
birth preparedness and complication readiness
self care including nutrition and high standard of hygiene
information on the role of the father, the male partner and the family.
