One of the reasons we place such an emphasis on shade matching, beside the obvious, is that sometimes a patient can only do one tooth a time. They may even come to fix their other teeth months or even years later. Not everyone comes in for a full smile transformation and we can ensure they leave happy because we match to their existing teeth. Nothing looks odd and their teeth look natural.

There's something to be said about the effort it takes to ensure the patient leaves with a natural smile. It's easy to plonk down some composite and "mould" a tooth or close a space, but real artistry is matching composite to just the teeth you're working on and anatomy. The end result needs to look as though the patient never visited a dentist. It's a case of, "Maybe she's/he's born with it..." 😎😉😜

This was an extreme case where the patient came in thinking she had to remove the tooth. She had done a root canal on it five years back and neglected to crown it and is also very scared to go for regular cleanings. This resulted in the tooth becoming mobile and also changing colour due to the denerving. Since she had no pain, we made the tooth look presentable and helped her keep it for a little longer until she's ready to remove it.

Peg-shaped laterals are a developmental anomaly — the tooth bud doesn’t fully form, so the tooth erupts smaller and conical. Genetics play a big role. Sometimes it runs in families but easier to fix than you would think. A little composite manipulation and voilà - a normal looking lateral incisor!
