Today marked a truly wonderful moment of reaping of a vision that began on Mandela Day—our collaborative project between Durban and Coastal Mental Health (DCMH) and Agric Africa Development (AAD).

Our initiative, now proudly named “From the Garden to the Kitchen”, is designed to strengthen sustainability across DCMH centres by producing fresh, nutritious vegetables that will directly support the wellbeing of our residents.

This year, AAD launched the first phase of the programme at the Sherwood Hostel, establishing a thriving gardening project and providing hands-on training to our staff. Their commitment to agricultural development and community upliftment has already laid a strong foundation, with plans to expand the programme within Sherwood and roll it out to other DCMH centres in the near future.

This milestone reflects the power of partnership, skills development, and sustainable food production—ensuring healthier meals, empowered staff, and greener spaces for our residents.

We are proud to announce that our Chief Social Worker, Ms Pinky Mhlongo, delivered a powerful presentation at the 8th Annual Africa Global Mental Health Institute Conference, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel from 17–19 November 2025.

Presenting under the theme “Interdisciplinary Approaches to Transgenerational Trauma in Africa,” Ms Mhlongo shared insights from her paper:
✨ “When Home Isn’t an Option: Long-Term Residential Care for Psychosocial Disabilities in South Africa – An 80-Year Study from DCMH.”

👏 DCMH applauds Ms Mhlongo for her exceptional contribution, which continues to elevate our work and strengthen our impact in the mental health sector.

The knowledge gained and partnerships formed at the conference will play a vital role in enhancing DCMH’s programmes and interventions.

We remain committed to advancing mental health care and championing psychosocial disability support across South Africa.

Durban and Coastal Mental Health and DUT partnered to provide the students with counselling and educational services as they go to exams.

This comes at a very critical time where students feel overwhelmed and on occasions some even feeling suicidal.

Celebrate abilities, “Beyond the Label”
Excitement is building for Casual Day 2025, hosted by Durban’s Centre for Mental Health (DCMH).

This year’s theme, “Beyond the Label”, is more than a slogan—it’s a call to action. It reminds us that people with disabilities are not defined by what they can’t do, but should be celebrated for everything they can achieve.

DCMH invites the community to take part in this meaningful initiative by wearing Casual Day stickers and merchandise. All proceeds go directly to supporting DCMH’s wide range of programmes, helping the organisation continue making a real difference in the lives of persons with disabilities.

Stickers and merchandise are available in various sizes, but stock is limited, and popular sizes tend to sell out quickly. Community members are encouraged to place their orders early to avoid disappointment.

By participating, you are not only showing solidarity with persons with disabilities, but you are also helping DCMH sustain its vital work—making this Casual Day an opportunity to celebrate abilities, embrace inclusivity, and create positive change.

Let’s go Beyond the Label together!

Durban and Coastal Mental Health (DCMH) is deeply grateful to the Auditing Department of eThekwini Municipality for their generous support during Mandela Month.

As part of their Mandela Month outreach, officials visited our Mpumalanga Day Care Centre in Mpumalanga, KZN — a facility dedicated to caring for children with mental health conditions. Their incredible contribution included:

✅ Painting the facility to create a brighter, more welcoming space
✅ Donating essential provisions
✅ Supplying much-needed play equipment for the children

This thoughtful act has brought smiles, hope, and comfort to our young beneficiaries. Your efforts truly embody the spirit of Ubuntu and the legacy of Nelson Mandela — making a difference where it matters most.

💚 From all of us at DCMH, thank you!
