Durban and Coastal Mental Health and DUT partnered to provide the students with counselling and educational services as they go to exams.

This comes at a very critical time where students feel overwhelmed and on occasions some even feeling suicidal.

Celebrate abilities, “Beyond the Label”
Excitement is building for Casual Day 2025, hosted by Durban’s Centre for Mental Health (DCMH).

This year’s theme, “Beyond the Label”, is more than a slogan—it’s a call to action. It reminds us that people with disabilities are not defined by what they can’t do, but should be celebrated for everything they can achieve.

DCMH invites the community to take part in this meaningful initiative by wearing Casual Day stickers and merchandise. All proceeds go directly to supporting DCMH’s wide range of programmes, helping the organisation continue making a real difference in the lives of persons with disabilities.

Stickers and merchandise are available in various sizes, but stock is limited, and popular sizes tend to sell out quickly. Community members are encouraged to place their orders early to avoid disappointment.

By participating, you are not only showing solidarity with persons with disabilities, but you are also helping DCMH sustain its vital work—making this Casual Day an opportunity to celebrate abilities, embrace inclusivity, and create positive change.

Let’s go Beyond the Label together!

Durban and Coastal Mental Health (DCMH) is deeply grateful to the Auditing Department of eThekwini Municipality for their generous support during Mandela Month.

As part of their Mandela Month outreach, officials visited our Mpumalanga Day Care Centre in Mpumalanga, KZN — a facility dedicated to caring for children with mental health conditions. Their incredible contribution included:

âś… Painting the facility to create a brighter, more welcoming space
âś… Donating essential provisions
âś… Supplying much-needed play equipment for the children

This thoughtful act has brought smiles, hope, and comfort to our young beneficiaries. Your efforts truly embody the spirit of Ubuntu and the legacy of Nelson Mandela — making a difference where it matters most.

SAPS Workshop on Section 40 of the Mental Health Care Act

On 22 July 2025, Durban and Coastal Mental Health, in collaboration with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, successfully hosted a training session for approximately 170 members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) on the Mental Health Care Act (MHCA) No. 17 of 2002.

The workshop took place at the Archie Gumede Conference Centre in Mayville, Durban, and focused specifically on Section 40 of the MHCA, which outlines the responsibilities of SAPS officers in responding to mental health-related incidents.

The primary objectives of the training were to:
• Strengthen SAPS officers’ understanding of their statutory role under the MHCA.
• Share common challenges faced in the field.
• Foster intersectoral dialogue and collaborative problem-solving approaches.

The session was well received, with SAPS representatives commending its relevance, practicality, and impact. The engagement highlighted the critical importance of ongoing capacity building and the need for strong interdepartmental partnerships to ensure a humane and lawful response to mental health emergencies.

This initiative reflects a shared commitment to dignified, rights-based care and underscores the role of SAPS as key stakeholders in the mental health

Sherwood Hostel – Mandela Day Celebrations with Hope Foundation

Sherwood Hostel was honoured to commemorate Mandela Day in partnership with the Hope Foundation, marking a day filled with compassion, service, and empowerment.

Pre-Mandela Day Contributions:

Leading up to Mandela Day, we were thrilled to be introduced to a new donor, Pastor Kwanda from the Hope Foundation. Following a successful meeting, Pastor Kwanda visited our centre and immediately began supporting our needs. He and his team cleared overgrown grass and trees, beautifully transforming our surroundings and fulfilling a long-standing request.

Mandela Day Activities:

On Mandela Day itself, the Hope Foundation returned with even greater commitment:
1. Gardening Project:
Residents actively participated in planting activities and received gardening attire. This initiative not only beautified the space but also fostered a sense of ownership and pride.
2. Hostel Beautification:
Volunteers painted doors, planks, and other key areas including spaces near the kitchen, laundry, and life skills room — all of which greatly enhanced the hostel’s appearance.
3. Donations and Essentials:
The Foundation generously donated blankets for all residents, party bags, food, and other essential items such as plastic cups, bowls, spoons, and bulbs.
4. Respectful Engagement:
The Hope Foundation team treated our residents with dignity and care, making the day truly special and memorable for everyone involved.

Looking Ahead:

The Hope Foundation has promised to continue their support, with future plans that include:
• Supplying new beds.
• Expanding the fruit and vegetable gardens.
• Additional painting and maintenance work.
• Ongoing collaboration with management to support life skills development.

Conclusion:

This partnership has proven to be more than a once-off event — it’s the beginning of an ongoing relationship grounded in shared values and commitment to community upliftment.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Pastor Kwanda and the Hope Foundation for their generosity and dedication. It was a productive and inspiring Mandela Day.
