Breathwork for Health and Longevity

Do you want to live a long, happy life full of vitality?
Do you want to perform at your best, recover from training better and have less injuries?
Do you want to be able to deal with the normal challenges and stresses of life with ease and flow?

Then this workshop is for you!
In order to be healthy, we pay attention to the food we eat, getting the right combinations of excersize and take care of our mental health, but most of us don't pay attention to or realise how much our breathing habits impact our health. You can be doing all the 'right things' but if you're not thinking about and working on how you breathe, then many of the other things you are doing are going to have little to no impact on your quality of life.

Learn foundational, scientifically proven, simple techniques to build upon, introducing breath holds, to build a robust respiratory system.
Improve athletic performance, VO2 max, daily wellbeing, mental health, longevity and overall quality of life.
Lower blood pressure, reduce lactic acid build up, improve endurance, speed and recovery in sports and training.
Improve your sleep and circulation, reduce stress and anxiety symptoms, build resilience and awareness.
(No previous experience in breathwork or yoga is required)

I have been studying the breath and pranayama for 8 years and have a deep understanding of movement, yoga, and various sports and fitness modalities. Through continued learning, study, daily practice and experience, she imparts this knowledge in a clear, simple and humorous way (cause life can be too serious!) for you to incorporate these techniques into your day to day life and current training program.

As I am living and working in Thailand for most of the year, don't miss this opportunity to enhance your wellbeing and live a vibrant, healthy, joyful life! ✨️🫶🏼

Practice. What does it mean to you? What does that involve? How much of a priority is it in your life?

To me, it is intertwined with life, all things. Everything is interconnected, joy, suffering, success, failure, birth, and death. Many things are out of our control, but the things that really determine the quality of your life, are mostly within your hands.

Prana, Chi, your Life force, vital energy. When flowing with the rythms of nature, cultivated with care, patience, commitment and love for yourself, guides ones attention to that which is truly important. We can break free of the chains that bind us, we can feel real empathy and compassion for others. The infinite dance of life, evolution and consciousness in this infinite Universe, to be part of it in this body, this life with this breath, is truly a gift.

Committing to a daily pranayama and meditation practice has been for me, the most precious gift I have given myself. Letting go of the outcomes, the transformation it can bring is beyond words. I wish that for us all.

If you'd like to join me this Sunday at Kaya Shala Yoga Studio I'll be sharing some of these wonderful life changing practices. Drop me an email or message to book. 🙏🏼

What is breathwork?

Breathwork is:

“The regulated activity of inhalation and exhalation consciously engaged in, to exercise and optimize the organs of respiration and brainstem nervous impulses that control breathing, with an outcome of improved respiration efficiency across a 24-hour period. “
(Dr Paul Dallaghan)

Build stress resilience, develop a robust respiratory system, and dive into deeper meditative states with an engaged, regular, dedicated breathwork practice.

Pranayama is the practice of suspending, pausing, or 'no breath'. Mindful attention on the space between the inhalation and the exhalation. A natural meditative state of mind can then arise in this 'no breath' state...

See you soon Durban... ✌🏼🥳🇿🇦🧘‍♂️

I am delighted to be sharing the following 2 workshops/practice sessions with you at the serene in Salt Rock.

THE BREATH.

Prana, Chi, your Life force energy.
You may have heard of nadis, ida, pingala, the chakras, kundalini, samadhi to name a few. You may have even tried some breathing techniques in a yoga class like anuloma viloma (that's the alternate nostril breath one) or bee breath. If you're a teacher you may have a slightly better understanding of pranayama but perhaps have not really felt the profound effects it can have on the nervous system when applied with deeper understanding, felt experience and embodiment of seated practices and asana, from the heart, the residue...
Classical pranayama with a modern understanding, applied sincerely, I share these offerings with you.
♡♡♡
This is in 2 parts, exploring the Yin and Yang elements of life (you don’t have to attend both), no experience in breathwork necessary. Reach out if you have any queries. We'll stay for tea after to connect and ask any questions that may arise. These workshops/practice sessions are open to all, sincere students and teachers welcome...
Om xx Kirsten

Join me on Sunday 29th September 2-5pm in Salt Rock at Kaya Shala for part 1, Exploring the Rivers of Mind - the Yin elements, and on Sunday the 6th of October 10:30am-1:30pm at Kaya Shala for part 2, The Transformative Power of the Breath - the Yang elements.
Bring your mat, water bottle, pillow and blanket.
R300pp for each session, R500pp for both. Limited spaces.

Experience a deeper understanding of 'the breath', kriyas (Incl nauli), preparation, kumbhaka, uddiyana/hatha zone, energy centres, regulate your nervous system, feel the value of mantra, pranavah japa, start a simple 20 minute daily home sitting/breath routine, developing organically from there, as you practice, with sincerity. As a teacher, these gatherings may help you bring more simple breath/pranayama practices into classes in a clear, simple, safe way, maintaining balance in the nervous system, potentially deepening our awareness.

Prānāyāma has been referred to in modern literature as ‘yogic breathing’. This is an attempt to differentiate breathing exercises as noted in the yogic texts from general breathwork. Yet the term ‘yogic breathing’ is unsatisfactory as it neither defines or accurately explains the nature of prānāyāma and instead implies some alternate obscure way of breathing. Ironically, prānāyāma correctly defined means ‘no breath’.

The earliest recorded definition of prānāyāma is from about the 4th century C.E., in the Patanjalayogashastra, a composite text considered the most comprehensive and systematic explanation on yoga, its mechanism and experience (1). It prescribes no doctrine but rather details the outcome of yoga, the necessary mental attributes, and different states of consciousness. Prānāyāma, as part of the mechanism of yoga, is a composite of two Sanskrit words: prāna + ayāma:

Prāna as detailed in the yoga sutras is clearly meant as the breath. Many interpreters extrapolate the meaning to include esoteric understandings of bodily and psychic energy, which some later texts make reference to. This is not the meaning Patanjali attributes in the Yoga Sutras.

PERSPECTIVE... 🙃👀

"We literally make the world what it is, from the many things we perceive it could be. Doing so is perhaps the primary fact of our being, and perhaps of Being itself. We face a multitude of prospects - of manifold realities, each almost tangible - and by choosing one pathway rather than another, reduce that multitude to the singular actuality of reality.
In doing so, we bring the world from becoming into Being. This is the most profound of mysteries. What is the potential that confronts us? And what constitutes our strange ability to shape that possibility, and to make what is real and concrete from what begins, in some sense, as the merely imaginary?"
Jordan B Petersen - Beyond Order

Everything we take in, consume, and are exposed to in life shapes our perceived, conscious reality. Opinions, actions, beliefs, morals, ethics, influences, desires, choices, temptations and all that we avoid and ignore, right or wrong, good or evil, it's all from the same source.
So how are you going to CREATE your reality from here?...

I choose love! 💙

And at the end of the day, your feet should be dirty, your hair messy and your eyes sparkling!...
👣🌞🌴😎🌈

Give of your best every day, don't waste your time on things that don't really matter, don't lie, don't screw other people over, play fair, set your boundaries, be open to learning new things, meditate, be curious, have fun!

Play hard, kiss softly, love more! 💙
You only get 1 shot at this gift of life... don't half arse it, always use your full arse! 😉✌🏼

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction...

I'm sure at some point, you've come across this saying. So what exactly does it mean? Well, in the laws of physics, all actions/interactions come in pairs. For example: a fish uses its fins to push water backwards in order to swim. The water however also pushes the fish forwards. The size of the force on the water, equals the size of the force on the fish. The more effort the fish uses, the faster it goes...

Every action we take will result in a reaction no matter how big, or small.

I'll leave you to perhaps reflect on this further yourself with a quote from his Holiness, the Dalai Lama... 😊

“When we are motivated by compassion and wisdom, the results of our actions benefit everyone, not just our individual selves or some immediate convenience. When we are able to recognize and forgive ignorant actions of the past, we gain strength to constructively solve the problems of the present.”

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go...

"In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few"
(Shunryu Suzuki - Zen teacher)

SHOSHIN 初心 is a word from Zen Buddhism meaning; beginner's mind.

Throughout the evolution of humanity, civilisations and societies have become more complex. This phrase ultimately points to the approach that one could adopt to successfully and peacefully navigate and solve the complexities of our existence and consciousness.

In Jordan Petersen's latest book "Beyond Order", he eloquently writes:
"It is useful to take your place at the bottom of a hierarchy. It can aid in the development of gratitude and humility. Gratitude: There are people whose expertise exceeds your own, and you should be wisely pleased about that. There are many valuable niches to fill, given the many complex and serious problems we must solve. The fact that there are people who fill those niches with trustworthy skill and experience is something for which to be truly thankful.

Humility: It is better to presume ignorance and invite learning than to assume sufficient knowledge and risk the consequent blindness. It is much better to make friends with what you do not know than with what you do know, as there is an infinite supply of the former but a finite stock of the latter. When you are tightly boxed in or cornered - all to often by your own stubborn and fixed adherence to some unconsciously worshipped assumptions - all there is to help you is what you have not yet learned."

Our Story

I am Kirsten-Mia Hickey - a yoga teacher, trained chef and wellbeing coach from Durban, South Africa. Travelling and living in a variety of countries, whilst experiencing different cultures, has given me invaluable experiences and life lessons. Having initially trained and worked as a chef, my path took me to selling luxury motor vehicles, and eventually finding yoga.

From the first yoga class I took, I knew ultimately that teaching this ancient and rewarding practice was my purpose. I completed my 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training at Samahita in Thailand under the guidance of Paul Dallaghan, providing me with the skills necessary to teach and instilling in me the importance of a holistic approach to yoga and life. With my natural curiosity and through continued learning, teaching and practice, I have discovered a passion for a variety of styles of yoga including pranayama and meditation.

Regardless of the style being taught, I always ensure that all students feel welcome, included and safe. I look to bring a sense of humour, joy and respect to the practice in every class.

Bringing together my skills as a trained chef and yoga teacher, combined with my life interests and hobbies, I am able to offer individuals and groups alike a variety of services to help improve physical and mental wellbeing.
