Returning to running post-partum:

While it may be relatively easy and quicker to return to other activities such as walking, cycling and swimming, returning to running postpartum can be challenging as it is a high impact activity, putting a lot of stress to the body that is still recovering.

In one study, 84% of women reported musculoskeletal pain when returning to running postpartum, mainly in lower limb. Lower back and pelvic pain were also reported. Engaging in running during pregnancy (where safe) increases the likelihood of returning to running after delivery.

Everyone is different, with every pregnancy being unique. This makes some people to be able to return to running sooner, while some may need to wait a little longer. The recent recommended guidelines for return to running is 12 weeks post-partum, following a screening process that includes pelvic floor, muscle strength and abdominal screening. Additionally Strength training during and after pregnancy reduces the odds of postpartum pain, stress urinary incontinence and abdominal separation.

A Biokineticist can assess and give you a guided exercise program to prepare you to return to running post-partum.

In my opinion, recovery after pregnancy is not thoroughly addressed, particularly post C-section.

Getting contradicting information of whether or not you should use certain supplements to speed up recovery or support bones and joints, and whether you can get back to training sooner or later, it can be all overwhelming.

It sounds easy being told you have to wait six weeks before you’re cleared to exercise, and on your check up the main focus is on your uterus and incision. However, there’s much more involved than that, especially considering the layers of soft tissues that are cut through when delivering the baby in the case of a C-Section. Let alone the body changes due to hormonal changes.

Personally, as much I was training throughout my pregnancy, getting back to training postpartum was not just bouncing back to it.  I had to relearn how to move, how to activate certain muscles, while also making sure I am not overdoing it.
It was not as smooth as I thought it would be, but I am fortunate to have the Biokinetics knowledge which I applied and safely got back into it.

It can be daunting for someone without such a background. Well, a Biokineticist can help you throughout your pregnancy, with safe exercises beneficial for you and your little one as long as you’re cleared to exercise. We can also take you through safe exercises post-partum, whether natural or C-section birth, to address issues such as diastasis recti (abdominal separation), pelvic floor weakness, overall core strength, general strengthening and weight management to get you to your optimal functioning.

There is still a gap that needs to be bridged between the professions gynaecology and biokinetics. Now that you do know, tell a friend to tell a friend 😊.
