Hi, it's Amanda. The face and voice behind the practice.

What a year 2023 has been! A year full of growth and opportunity. As I've been reflecting on this year, I have been overwhelmed with gratefulness for so many things.

The two physio's that I get to work with have carried the practice many times this year while I have had other responsibilities to tend to. It is a privilege to act as a mentor to them, to assist with their growth and to learn from them as physio's and as individuals. Thank you for the role that you have played!

It's been a busy year trying to juggle the responsibilities of managing a practice, treating patients and studying further. I feel so grateful to be able to study and work with the human body. It is the most complex, miraculous and difficult thing to understand as we have all been created and knitted together so similarly, yet so differently!

Having completed the coursework section of my Masters through Wits, in 2024 I will be doing research into the role that neuroplasticity plays in sports injuries. This is a relatively new field of understanding in sports medicine, and I feel privileged to have this opportunity!

I will also be embarking on a new journey of lecturing, where I will be assisting SPT students in 2024.

Here's to next year, and all that it brings!

Meghann joined us this year after having completed her comm. serv in Eshowe last year.

She is a go-getter and has fitted so many opportunities into one short year!

- She completed a specialization course in vestibular conditions
- She got field side experience while working alongside Northwood School rugby teams
- She worked as a physio at the Sani2c race villages
- She assisted the Stellenbosch hockey team as their sports physio during the USSA tournament
- She has accumulated many hours of experience while instructing Pilates classes
- She has treated every patient she has laid hands on with the utmost care, love, skill and determination possible.

The cherry on the top has been the opportunity for her to travel with the u21 SA Hockey girls to Santiago, Chile as the accompanying sports physio.

Keep reaching for your dreams Meghann, we think you've already achieved half of them in one year 😉

Reece is the champion physio in our Cape Town practice!

He is so hard working, passionate about his job and is constantly trying to challenge and improve his wealth of knowledge! Most importantly.. he always goes the extra mile for his patients.

This year he worked as the physio for one of the top teams at the 10's rugby tournament in Cape Town, and has built some incredible relationships with patients in the practice!

In 2024, Reece will be doing SPT - an advanced sports physiotherapy course. This is a demanding, challenging and pivotal opportunity to shape his career!

Our practice, and your patients - are lucky to have you Reece!

We are so excited to share a little bit of what's been happening behind the scenes of the practice this year😁

We are celebrating a year of growth for all the physio's in our practice. We place a large emphasis on upskilling ourselves and while this takes a lot of time and energy it reflects in a higher level of care for our patients🤓

We have all found ourselves following this career because we love people and want to help each person we encounter live life to the full💥 We cherish the relationships we have built with our patients, and all the many conversations and encounters we have had with so many different people.

We are also all about saying YES to opportunities that come our way - so keep an eye out for our posts this week, that share some of 2023's success stories! 🥳

So, what is the vestibular system?

The vestibular system is a sensory system located in the inner ear and brainstem. It helps us maintain balance, understand our body's position, and coordinate head and eye movements. Key components include the semicircular canals for detecting rotational movements, otolith organs for linear acceleration, the vestibular nerve for transmitting information to the brain, and brain regions like the brainstem, cerebellum, and cerebral cortex for processing and responding to vestibular input. When functioning properly, the vestibular system enables stability and precise movement control. However, issues with this system can lead to symptoms like dizziness and imbalance, requiring specialized evaluation and management.

Stay tuned to find out more about vestibular conditions and how your physiotherapist can work with you to solve these issues

Have you ever felt like the room is spinning around you or that you are constantly dizzy?

Dizziness and vertigo are related but distinct sensations often associated with issues in the inner ear or the vestibular system, which plays a crucial role in maintaining balance and spatial orientation.

Dizziness: Dizziness is a broad term that describes a range of sensations, including lightheadedness, unsteadiness, and a feeling of being off-balance. Dizziness is often a symptom rather than a specific condition and may not necessarily involve a spinning or whirling sensation.

Vertigo: Vertigo, on the other hand, is a specific type of dizziness characterized by a spinning or whirling sensation. People with vertigo often feel like they or their surroundings are moving or spinning, even when they are stationary. It is typically caused by problems in the inner ear. Vertigo can be brief and episodic or chronic, depending on the underlying cause.

Both dizziness and vertigo can significantly impact a person's quality of life, as they may lead to falls, disorientation, and difficulty performing everyday tasks.

You wouldn't be the only one that has noticed that elderly men and women often have oddly shaped feet and toes. Most people later in life, and some unexpectedly early, develop claw toes, hammer toes or bunions. What causes these conditions? Can you prevent them?
Does footwear have anything to do with it?

Watch our next post to learn more about these conditions and find the answers to some of these very commonly asked questions.

Our Story

I qualified in 2013 from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Westville campus) with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy Honours Degree. I completed my year of community service at the Pietermaritzburg Assessment and Therapy centre in 2014. Thereafter, I worked at the Sharks Medical Centre for Callie Hugo Physiotherapy for three and half years.

In April 2018 I opened my own practice, Amanda Hawke Physiotherapy at Westville Boys High School. I work in conjunction with Rogan Heyns Biokineticist Inc. and together we provide Physiotherapy and Biokinetics services to the school pupils, staff, parents as well as private patients.

I have completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Physiotherapy and have an interest in a wide variety of sports, orthopaedic and neuromusculoskeletal injuries.

I have a passion for people, the outdoors, medicine and sport and I love the fact that my career incorporates all four of these elements.
