Why loss degrees measured in decibels are not the only criteria to determine hearing disability?

A 'mild' hearing loss can be disabling enough to justify reasonable accommodations, such as assistive technology, devices, and modifications, depending on the situation. Even a mild hearing loss (PTA > 26 dB) may represent a moderate functional limitation, depending on the applicable legislation (e.g., Employment Equity Act, Income Tax Act) and individual circumstances.

To accurately assess hearing disability, request a Diagnostic Evaluation and Functional Report from a qualified health professional, guided by the Technical Assistance Guidelines on the Employment of Persons with Disabilities (TAG, Chapters 5 & 6) and the White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (WPRPD). A hearing disability rights expert's involvement is crucial in compiling this report, considering clinical test results, functional impact, and situational analysis.
