Port Placement/Insertion

A port disc is 2,5 – 4 cm in diameter and this is buried under the skin of the anterior chest wall with tunneled tubing connecting this to a large vein at the base of the neck.

Ports are inserted when long term intravenous therapy- usually chemotherapy- is anticipated, protecting the patient’s upper limb veins from the effect of the treatments and multiple needle/drip insertions.

A special needle is inserted into the disc with each treatment. Ports are well tolerated, safe and can remain in place for many months during treatments.

Another great success story! This young patient with known cardiac problems suffered a seriously life-threatening stroke with left sided weakness.
