Professor Anthony “Tony” Figaji—President of the Society of Neurosurgeons of South Africa—has been awarded the Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship, one of the continent’s most prestigious academic honours.

Why this matters:

The fellowship recognises Prof Figaji’s pioneering research into childhood traumatic brain injuries (TBI), a leading cause of death and disability worldwide.

His team’s world-first paediatric brain-monitoring dataset is opening new doors to targeted therapies and better recovery for young patients.

“Understanding the brain’s response is critical if we’re to change children’s life-long trajectories,” Prof Figaji notes.

This accolade not only honours an exceptional scientist but also shines a light on the vital work being done to safeguard the futures of millions of children affected by brain injury.
