Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA) A national organization with branches in various parts of the country.

As Muslim medical and health professionals we are committed to the values expressed by the Hippocratic Oath and believe that it is our responsibility to serve the community. The Islamic Medical Association is a non profit organization that has been taking healthcare to the people for the last 30 years. The organization was established by a group of young doctors who realized that health care to the underprivileged was compromised and of inferior quality. The precursor of the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMA), called Lajnatul Attiba (The Doctors’ Committee) was formed in July 1974, amid much opposition from medical and non medical Muslims and non Muslims. These were humble beginnings with meetings being held at the homes of the handful of members. The Lajnatul Attiba was transformed into the IMA in 1979 and the first IMA Durban Branch Meeting was held on Tuesday, 30 October 1979. The IMA has grown in leaps and bounds and has over the years developed into a large national body with a membership of around 1000 health care professionals and a further 5500 on the mailing list. The Islamic Medical Association is a national organization with branches all over South Africa. The IMA’s main branches operate in Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Klerksdorp and Ladysmith. . IMA South Africa is affiliated to the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA) which is the international body of IMA’s across the world.

IMASA-Durban at McCords Eye Hospital – Year-End Luncheon

IMASA-Durban was honoured to attend the McCords Eye Hospital Year-End Luncheon on Wednesday, 10 December. IMASA-Durban Chairperson and Coordinator of the Gift of Sight Programme, Yasiera Mahomed-Suliman, and Office Manager, Shirin Cassim, attended on behalf of IMASA-Durban, with representation also for the Caring Sisters Network (CSN).

We were humbled to receive Certificates of Appreciation, awarded in recognition of our ongoing support of the Cataract Surgery Programme, accepted on behalf of IMASA-Durban and CSN.

IMASA-Durban sponsors 12 cataract surgeries per month at McCords Eye Hospital, and in collaboration with AAKH, a further 7 surgeries per month at AAK Hospital, restoring sight to 19 patients monthly β€” impacting approximately 220 recipients in 2026, restoring vision and hope.

We were honoured to be recognised alongside Al Imdaad, Gift of the Givers, and Sultan Bahu organisations. May Allah accept this service as sadaqah jāriyah and reward all donors and partners. Δ€mΔ«n.
