This Nelson Mandela Day, Jackpersad & Partners Inc. honoured Madiba’s legacy through meaningful acts of service in Durban and Pietermaritzburg — united in purpose, rooted in compassion.

🌟 At Ethelbert Child and Youth Centre (Durban), our team hosted a heartwarming movies and popcorn afternoon, creating space for laughter, connection, and joy. We also provided a 3-month supply of groceries to support the home and its incredible work.

🌟 At the Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home, we contributed essential grocery donations, helping meet the daily needs of children cared for with love and dignity.

While Mandela Day asks for 67 minutes, we believe in giving beyond time — in service that uplifts, supports, and plants seeds of hope. 💛

What is Ventilation/Perfusion (V/Q) Scintigraphy?

A V/Q scan is a nuclear medicine test that assesses how well air and blood flow through the lungs

It looks at two things:
1. Ventilation: Airflow into the lungs
2. Perfusion: Blood flow into the lungs

Why do doctors do this test?

They usually want to check if there’s a blood clot in your lungs, called a pulmonary embolism. This can be very serious because it blocks blood flow.

How does the test work?

• Step 1: Ventilation
You breathe in a tiny amount of a safe, radioactive gas. This lets the doctor see which parts of your lungs are getting air.
• Step 2: Perfusion
You get a small injection of a harmless radioactive substance into your vein. This travels to your lungs and shows how blood flows through them.

What do doctors look for?

• If air is reaching a part of the lung but blood isn’t flowing there, it might mean a blockage (like a blood clot).
• If both air and blood flow are blocked, it might be something else, like infection or lung disease.

Is it safe?

Yes! The amount of radiation is very low and it’s safe. It doesn’t hurt much — just the small needle prick for the injection.

When is this test done?

• When a doctor suspects a blood clot in the lungs but other scans can’t be done.
• When someone can’t have a CT scan of the chest because of an iodine allergy or kidney problems.
• If a patient is pregnant and their doctor suspects a pulmonary embolism, a VQ scan will be the safest option due to the low radiation burden
