In celebration of World Disability Day, we held a Christmas Party at Philakade Care Home. The party was put together by Carol Carol Meyer from CHEP, and 2 of our wonderful volunteers - Linda and Daisy. Every Monday Daisy and Linda run a “arts and crafts” workshop with the residents, to bring some therapy, lighthearted fun, connection, and creativity to their week.
This residence cares for children and adults who are wheelchair / bed bound and have been abandoned, or whose families are unable to care for them. All their residents have stories of great hardship and suffering as well as great resilience, humour, and strength. They believe the poorest of the poor in Kwa-Zulu Natal have a right to patient centred long term care. People who are wheelchair bound, bedridden and needing 24-hour care deserve access to compassionate nursing care, especially people who are marginalised because they are homeless, destitute or abandoned.
Philakade has admitted 230 people since opening. Ages range between 1yrs and 95yrs.
Philakade receives no government funding. Their only income is from disability grants the residents give Philakade to care for them, and fundraising.
We would like to give a massive thanks to Carol and her HR Team at CHEP for kindly donating such generous care packs and treats for all the residents and members of staff. This day was the highlight of their year 😊
