To every mom and dad sitting in that hospital room right now, counting the hours, holding each other's hands, and waiting for the moment that will change your lives forever, this one is for you.

The overnight bag is packed. The car seat is ready. The nursery is waiting. And now it's just the two of you, in the quiet before the most incredible moment of your lives.

Dad, we see you too. We see the way you hold her hand a little tighter. The way you are trying to stay calm even though your heart is racing. The way you have shown up every single step of the way, from the first scan to this very moment.

Mom, you are stronger than you know. Everything you have carried, everything you have been through, it has all been leading to this. You are about to meet the little person who already loves the sound of your voice.

These are the moments you will carry in your heart forever.

Dr Berios is honoured to be part of these precious moments with families across KZN. From the first scan to the moment you hold your little one, we are with you.

Being told your pregnancy is high-risk can feel overwhelming. But high-risk does not mean something will go wrong. It simply means your pregnancy needs extra monitoring and specialist care, and that is exactly what we are here for.

What can make a pregnancy high-risk:
* Pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or thyroid disorders
* Autoimmune conditions
* Multiple pregnancy (twins or more)
* Pregnancy in women over 35
* Previous pregnancy complications or losses
* Placenta previa or other structural factors
* Gestational diabetes or preeclampsia developing during pregnancy

What high-risk care looks like with Dr Berios:
* More frequent antenatal check-ups and scans
* Specialist monitoring tailored to your specific condition
* Close collaboration with other specialists where needed
* Clear, open communication at every stage
* Emotional support throughout your pregnancy

Important facts:
* Preeclampsia affects 2 to 8% of pregnancies globally. Early detection through regular blood pressure monitoring is lifesaving
* Gestational diabetes affects 5 to 10% of pregnancies and is manageable with the right care
* With expert monitoring, the majority of high-risk pregnancies result in healthy mothers and babies

A high-risk pregnancy is a journey that deserves a trusted, experienced specialist by your side. Dr Berios has the expertise and the dedication to ensure the very best outcome for you and your baby.

You are in the home stretch. The third trimester, weeks 28 to 40, is when your baby gains the most weight, puts the finishing touches on their development, and prepares to meet you.

What is happening with your baby:
Week 28: Your baby weighs around 1kg and brain development is accelerating rapidly
Week 32: Baby is practising breathing movements and swallowing up to a litre of amniotic fluid daily
Week 34: Lungs are nearly mature. Most babies born from this point do very well
Week 36: Baby is gaining roughly half a kilogram per week. Space is getting tight
Week 38 to 40: Baby is full term. Head engages in the pelvis in preparation for birth

What you may experience:
Shortness of breath as baby pushes against your diaphragm
Increased back and pelvic pain
Swollen feet and ankles
Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions, normal and expected)
Trouble sleeping as the bump grows
Increased frequency of antenatal visits

What to prepare:
Pack your hospital bag from around week 35
Finalise your birth plan with Dr Berios
Set up the nursery and car seat
Attend antenatal classes if you have not done so

You are almost there. Dr Berios and the team are with you every step of the way to delivery.

DID YOU KNOW?

Your baby is more connected to you than you might realise.

Your voice is their favourite sound.
From around 18 weeks, your baby can hear you. Research shows that after birth, newborns recognise and prefer their mother's voice above all others. Reading and talking to your bump is never too early.

Your baby can taste what you eat.
Flavours from your diet pass into the amniotic fluid. Babies who are exposed to a variety of foods in the womb tend to be less fussy eaters after birth.

They feel your emotions.
When you feel stress, your baby feels it too.
The stress hormone cortisol crosses the placenta. Gentle movement, deep breathing, and rest are not luxuries during pregnancy. They are medicine.

Your baby practises breathing.
From around 32 weeks, your baby practises inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid to strengthen their lungs for the moment they take their first breath.

They already have a personality.
Some babies kick constantly. Others are quieter. Sleep and wake patterns, responses to sound, and movement preferences are all developing right now. You are already getting to know them.

The bond between you and your baby begins long before birth. Dr Berios is here to support every moment of that journey.

Welcome to your second trimester. Weeks 13 to 27 are often called the golden period of pregnancy, and for good reason.

What is happening with your baby:
Week 14: Your baby can make facial expressions, including frowning and squinting
Week 16: Limb movements are becoming more coordinated and visible on ultrasound
Week 18: Your baby can hear sounds from outside the womb
Week 20: The big anatomy scan. Baby's s*x is often visible. Baby is now covered in a protective coating called vernix
Week 24: A major milestone. With medical support, a baby born now has a chance of survival outside the womb
Week 26: Your baby's eyes can open and close for the first time

What you might be experiencing:
* Morning sickness usually eases off
* Energy levels improve
* Your bump becomes visible
* You may start to feel your baby move, known as quickening, from around week 18 to 20
* Round ligament pain as your uterus grows
* Backache and changes in posture

Key appointments this trimester:
* Anomaly scan at weeks 18 to 20 (detailed check of baby's anatomy)
* Regular blood pressure and urine checks
* Gestational diabetes screen around week 24 to 28

This is often when pregnancy truly feels real. Dr Berios will walk every step of this journey with you.

Found out you are pregnant? Congratulations!!!

The first thing to do is book your initial antenatal appointment with Dr Berios.

* Blood tests: blood group, Rh factor, iron, immunity, HIV, syphilis, rubella
* Blood pressure, weight, and general health assessment
* Discussion of vitamins, nutrition, and what to avoid in early pregnancy
* An ultrasound scan to confirm the heartbeat and rule out ectopic pregnancy
* Answers to every question you have (there are no silly questions here)

What to bring:
* The date of your last menstrual period
* Any previous scan or test results
* A list of any medications you are taking
* Your medical aid details

Dr Berios looks forward to being part of your journey right from the very beginning.

DID YOU KNOW?

The things your baby is already doing inside the womb will amaze you.
At 6 weeks: Your baby's heart is beating. It is smaller than a grain of rice, but it already has a heartbeat.
At 12 weeks: Your baby's fingerprints are already forming. That unique pattern will remain unchanged for the rest of their life.
At 18 weeks: Your baby can hear sounds. They can hear your heartbeat, your voice, and the world around you.
At 20 weeks: Your baby is covered in a fine, soft hair called lanugo, which helps regulate their body temperature.
At 24 weeks: Your baby's eyes can open and close. They are also beginning to develop sleep and wake cycles, just like after birth.
At 28 weeks: Your baby can recognise your voice and may even respond to music. Research shows babies show a preference for sounds they heard in the womb after birth.

Pregnancy is nothing short of miraculous. Dr Berios is honoured to witness these milestones alongside you.

Finding out you are pregnant is one of the most profound moments of your life. And your first trimester, those first 12 weeks, is where it all begins.

Here is what is happening inside you:
Week 5: Your baby's heart begins to beat, around 100 to 110 beats per minute
Week 6: Tiny arm and leg buds appear
Week 8: Your baby is about 1.5cm long and all major organs have started forming
Week 10: Fingers and toes are visible. Your baby can open and close its hands
Week 12: All major organs are present. The risk of miscarriage drops significantly

What you might be feeling:
* Morning sickness and nausea (often all day, not just mornings)
* Extreme fatigue as your body works hard to grow a placenta
* Breast tenderness and sensitivity
* Heightened sense of smell
* Emotional and mood changes driven by rising hormones

What to do:
* Book your first antenatal appointment as soon as possible, ideally before 10 weeks
* Start folic acid if you have not already
* Avoid alcohol, smoking, and raw or undercooked foods
* Rest as much as you need to

Dr Berios is here to guide you from the very first moment.
