Project No 16
I love making quilts as colour and pattern make me happy.
This quilt was finally completed as a wedding gift for my nephew Stuart. It started as lots of coloured squares from my constant pile of scraps, prior quilts, clothes and much more. Each square has an origin and a story. Kaffe Fasset is my inspiration and his use of shapes especially a simple square is incredible. Combining pattern is often best done on a quilt wall where you can move pieces and changes ideas. The combinations I played with were endless until I was happy with the final result. My last picture in this series shows how an idea can sometimes not work.
I always label my quilts as the story is recorded for years to come. This one is called "Blomme in die Veld" and is a joyful creation for life on a farm.

Project No 15
We tend to be a throw away society and yet we all own things that should be loved, repurposed and used for many more years to come. These two quilts were made by my mom in the 1990's and I have had them requilted. Off to a new home for someone else to enjoy the longevity of a home made quilt.

It's Spring
1st of September and we are seeing the beginning of new life.
My garden is small but I managed to put together this arrangement from the first blooms that are appearing.
My container vase that let's you fill up the various cylinders with an informal display from flowers to foliage.
May Spring bring you joy.

Naked clay. These pieces were made from the dregs that accumulates in my sink from washing hands, cleaning tools and all those bits of clay underglaze etc that must not find its way into your plumbing system. I throw it all into a large plastic bin and allow it to settle.
The Matrix was part of the Regional exhibition where it was launched. Unglazed pieces was the brief. They are now residing on my desk and work well for all my stationery needs.

Kiln mishaps.
These do happen. I placed one of my birds too close to a students soap dish and did not support it correctly. One forgets warm air in the kiln can make things move and my birdie fell over. Fused together forever. Rather liked this design but guess a good reminder to take care when stacking a glaze firing.

So many questions regarding these birds I make.
This is one in the process of being decorated. They are something I make for myself at present. I find the process relaxing and I normally make them when I need time out for myself. They are time consuming and there is no pressure for me to make to order. I feel everyone should find something they enjoy doing just for themselves. It is therapeutic. So at this stage not teaching nor selling. Sorry.

When you incorporate the fun of Lego and a newly decorated vase.
I love the Botanic Collection. My vase is host to both the Flower and Wildflower Bouquet.
Flowers. A flowers that will last as long as the vase. Made from plant based plastic and clay.

Fresh out of my kiln. Finding it challenging to create new pieces so making a few more birds is relaxing and enjoyable. I decorate the underbelly as well so they can be viewed from all angles. The colour combinations are endless but green with any colour is my favourite. Almost 100 in my flock .

1st April 2023

The perfect venue to find an Easter gift.
A small bowl for those sweet treats.
An extra large cuppa tea or coffee.
For someone who has everything a special soap dish is always welcome.
Hope to see you on Saturday.

It has slowly dawned on me that I am not a production potter. I love colour and pattern. Each piece I decorate has to be different. These small jam/instant coffee containers were the only two items I have managed to complete in the last few weeks. I hope they appeal to someone who would collect different pieces as and when I make. An eclectic collection. They will be coming with me to the next weekend 1 April. A great place pop in for some Easter gifting.

2023 has been a slow start with student classes. Maybe I am the only one who does not relish loading and unloading a kiln but it has to be done. The first glaze firing of various pieces made by them this year. Thankfully they all survived. Hope they will be happy with the outcome.

I did not stop at my studio. Decided to tidy up the spot where Ivin throws those perfect shapes. Rejects with cracks and splits lined up on the shelf create order. A catalog of good shapes and not so great. Also a reminder that so much can go wrong in the firing.

Can you believe the difference from a few days ago when it was chaos. My studio looking as neat as a pin. The reason I had to get my space tidy was
because I am hosting our Ceramic Association SA KZN AGM on Saturday 18th Feb. Loving all the mugs of the different makers perfectly lined up for that all important cup of tea. Bonus is a perfect space to start a fresh on Monday morning. Yay!

It is February of a brand new year. I should be embracing this beautiful serene bisque firing and planning the decoration. I then glance at the chaos of my studio table. I always have a plan to decorate my work and now it overwhelms me. There is still some order, student work waiting for me to start class again and completed birds waiting for a glaze firing. I do hope others feel this way occasionally.

Too choose between ceramics and the fun of collage is difficult. This page was created in response to the 5 day mini Collage course with .artist. In the course you can choose to work with either a cool colour or a warm colour and black and white. My first attempt was Phthalo Blue. I then wondered what would a warm colour look like. This was the result of Cadmium Yellow. It is suggested you limit yourself to 1hour to work quickly and intuitively. These 12 tiny blocks took me 2hours. It is not as quick as you think. My next attempt will a combination of the cool and warm from my stash box. Could be challenging.

Trying to find my ceramic mojo again. Have had no desire to decorate. Hopefully this batch of soap dishes thrown by Ivin will get me back in the mood. I love a bar of soap and this dish even holds that super large bar which shrinks to fit perfectly after a few uses. White pattern on sculpture clay creates a lovely toasted shadow in the glaze firing. Now I have to find that Eskom window for my bisque firing and then time to decorate.

Project 14
Ivin Molefe who throws my ceramics needed a new apron for a new year. He does not like an apron bib as it is warm in Durban but it has to be a throwing apron. Splits when you sit at the wheel and covers your legs. He wanted it long and a pocket in the front for his ci******es. I made three for him. Two in the star fabric and the third from a combination of schwe schwe. Trust they will last the year.
