Summerveld Equine Hospital The dedicated team of staff aim to give all equine patients the highest quality medical and surgical care possible

The hospital offers a 24 hour emergency service and has in-house patient facilities for 20 horses. As a busy equine hospital numerous procedures are performed under general anaesthesia, eg orthopedic, opthalmic, upper airway and abdominal surgeries. Medical cases and lameness investigations make up a large part of the work done in the hospital. Modern diagnostic equipment including videoendoscopy,

ultrasound scanners, shock wave therapy unit and x ray machines are used extensively in the hospital and in the field.

Summerveld Equine Hospital has known Thomas for many years. Dr Katzwinkel has recognised his athletic talents and decided to sponsor him in his running career. Let us introduce you to Thomas:
He was born and bred in Stellenbosch, attending Lückhoff high school. He has worked for Gold Circle for the pasts 29 years as maintenance man and supervisor. Prior to that he worked in construction and shop fitting. He is a local Summerveld resident. At the age of 34 he started running. In 1992 he ran his first Comrades Marathon. He completed 20 Comrades winning 3 silver medals. His best position was 232 out of 17000 runners!
These days, (at the grand age of 67) Thomas mostly enjoys shorter distances. His best time over 5km is 24 minutes and over 10km is 50 minutes. He often participates in the Park Run, his favourite being North Beach. His best position in that event is 24th out of over 900 runners. When he is not running, he is a volunteer at races, marshalling, time keeping and is a mentor to many young and old runners – encouraging them when he can.
Summerveld Equine Hospital wishes Thomas all the best for the NATAL CHAMPS on 12th April 2025.

These orphan ducklings were incubated and hatched this weekend. The mom was killed 10 days ago maybe by a genet or mongoose. Soon they will be big enough to join the rest of the troop of runner ducks.
