The Cost of Always Being the Strong One

There’s a version of you that people rely on.

The one who keeps going.
Who figures things out.
Who doesn’t fall apart when things get difficult.

And over time, that becomes your role.

Not because you chose it…
but because you were capable of carrying it.

So you keep showing up.
Keep handling things.
Keep holding it together.

But here’s the part people don’t talk about:

Being the strong one has a cost.

Not always visible.

But real.

It shows up in:
• tension that doesn’t fully leave
• tiredness that rest doesn’t fix
• a body that stays “on” even when life is quiet

Because strength, over time, can turn into constant override.

And the body keeps track of that.

Not as a weakness.

But as a signal.

That even the strong ones
were never meant to carry everything alone.

If this feels familiar, your body might not need more strength…

it might need support.

The body rarely jumps straight to burnout.

It gives signals first.

Small ones.

• tension that comes and goes
• restless sleep
• feeling tired even after resting
• irritability without a clear reason

Most people ignore these.

Because they can still function.

Until the signals get louder.

The body doesn’t go from fine to broken overnight.

It escalates.

The earlier you respond, the easier it is to support the system.

If your body has been whispering lately…

it might be time to listen.

I’ve been noticing something in practice…

A lot of people don’t come in because something is “seriously wrong.”

They come in because their body is just… tired.

Tired of carrying tension.
Tired of pushing through.
Tired of feeling like they can’t fully switch off.

They’re still functioning.
Still showing up.
Still doing what needs to be done.

But underneath it all, the body is working much harder than it should be.

Tight muscles.
Restless sleep.
That “always on” feeling.

And over time, that becomes normal.

Until it isn’t.

Body Stress Release isn’t about forcing anything.

It’s about giving the body the opportunity to let go of tension it has been holding onto for far too long.

Sometimes the body doesn’t need more effort.

It needs a chance to release.

Burnout rarely arrives suddenly.

It announces itself quietly.

Long before collapse, the body signals.

Most people override the early signs because they still appear functional.

Early indicators often look like:

• Tight shoulders that never fully release
• Shallow breathing without noticing
• Waking up tired despite sleeping
• Irritability that feels “out of character”
• Loss of enthusiasm for things that used to matter
• Digestive changes under stress
• Difficulty concentrating for sustained periods

None of these feel dramatic.

That’s why they’re ignored.

High-functioning individuals are especially good at normalising them.

“I’m just busy.”
“It’s just a stressful season.”
“I’ll rest later.”

But the nervous system doesn’t categorise stress as temporary or permanent.
It only registers load.

Early signs are protective signals.

They are not weakness.
They are calibration warnings.

The goal isn’t to panic when you notice them.

It’s to respond before escalation becomes necessary.

Intervening early is always easier than recovering late.

For some people, that response looks like reducing load.
For others, it means supporting the body to release accumulated tension patterns before they consolidate.

Body Stress Release is one way to do that — gently, without force.

If you recognise the early signs and want to address them before they escalate, you can explore sessions here:

Isn’t Regulation Just a Buzzword?
Whenever nervous system regulation is discussed, there’s understandable skepticism.

“Isn’t this just self-care rebranded?”
“Isn’t this just mindset work?”
“Isn’t stress normal?”

Fair questions.

Because regulation has been watered down online.

Clinically, regulation is not about relaxing more.
It is about autonomic nervous system function.

Your nervous system has activation states:
• sympathetic (mobilised — fight/flight)
• parasympathetic (rest/digest)

Regulation is the ability to move between these states without getting stuck.

Chronic stress shifts the baseline.

Muscles remain subtly contracted.
Breathing becomes shallow.
Sleep becomes lighter.
Digestion shifts.
Drive fluctuates.

Most people adapt and call that “normal.”

That’s not mindset.
That’s physiology recalibrating under load.

Coping strategies can help temporarily.

But coping does not necessarily shift baseline tone.

Regulation requires interrupting stored stress patterns in the body.

Body Stress Release is one practical way to support that shift.

It works by allowing the body to release accumulated tension so the nervous system can move out of chronic threat response — gently and without force.

If you’ve read this series and recognise the signs of dysregulation in yourself, and you’re ready to move beyond coping, you can book here:

Not because regulation is trendy.

Because physiology always responds to sustained pressure.

26/02/2026

The body tolerates stress quietly.

Until it doesn’t.

You can override:
• fatigue
• tension
• shallow breathing
• disrupted sleep
• digestive changes

For years.

High-functioning people are often very good at override.

But every time you override, the nervous system learns:
“Signals don’t require response.”

Over time, those signals escalate.

What begins as:
• tight shoulders
• irritability
• low motivation
• feeling “wired but tired”

Can progress to:
• burnout
• anxiety
• chronic pain
• immune disruption

Not because the body failed.

Because it adapted.

Physiology does not negotiate indefinitely.

Override is temporary.
Consequence is cumulative.

The earlier stress patterns are interrupted, the easier recalibration becomes.

Body Stress Release is one way to support that interruption.

It allows the body to release stored tension patterns so the nervous system can shift out of chronic threat response — gently, without force.

If you recognise the pattern of override in yourself, supporting regulation before escalation is a practical step.

Our this week is about 44 year old *Conrad who was experiencing a midlife crisis. He felt crushed by responsibility, with his business running into financial difficulties , his mental and emotional stress was accompanied by a stiff, aching neck and frequent headaches. He had pins and needles in his arms and his toes cramped at night, He was diagnosed with severe stress. Earlier in his life he had fractured three thoracic vertebrae in a motorbike accident in the past. Body stress was released in that area as well as in his neck, lower back and diaphragm. His physical problems were reduced after two sessions. In addition he had let go of a great deal of his emotional stress. This was proven by an unexpected benefit - after 40 years of biting his fingernails he dropped the habit entirely.

The key to understanding stress is this: as long as the stress does NOT strain the individual, whether emotionally, physically or mentally, beyond that which he is capable of handling, it is beneficial. The stress MUST NOT go beyond our level of adaptability.

Our : *Alec, a 48 year old technician, is the essence of an action man. His passions are sailing, diving and skydiving. His adventurous lifestyle took its toll on his spine though, and he had to undergo 3 laminectomies (disk surgeries) in the lower back. The pain in his lower back remained intense though, and he had a numb foot because of it. The only way he could cope with the pain and his active life was to take 6-10 painkillers a day.
So he came to BSR with a specific goal: to go on a 3 day sailing trip without having to take any pain killers or anti-inflammatory medication. He had a BSR session at two-week intervals, over eleven months and gradually the rigid muscles along his whole spine relaxed, nerve pressure diminished and he could reduce the medication. The back muscles became balanced and his flexibility returned. Finally his patience and determination paid off and he achieved his objective - he led his four-man crew on the planned voyage without medication.
