Movement Builds More Than Fitness

🏃‍♀️ Active kids build stronger bones

Children and teenagers need movement — not only for fitness, but for healthy bone development.

Bones respond to activity. When children run, jump, dance, skip, play sport, or enjoy active games, their bones are gently challenged to grow stronger.

Regular movement helps support:

✔ Bone strength
✔ Muscle development
✔ Balance and coordination
✔ Confidence and healthy growth

The best part? Movement doesn’t need to feel like exercise.
For children, it can simply be play.

Encourage more active moments every day — outside, at school, at home, or with friends.

Because strong bones start early, and active childhoods help build stronger futures. 🦴✨

Child Protection Week | 25 May – 1 June

🧒🦴 Protecting children includes protecting their future health

During Child Protection Week, we are reminded that every child deserves the opportunity to grow, thrive, and build a healthy future.

Bone health starts early. Childhood and the teenage years are critical for building peak bone density — the strong foundation that supports health later in life.

Parents, caregivers, schools, and communities can help children build stronger bones through:

✔ Regular movement and active play
✔ Calcium-, vitamin D-, and protein-rich nutrition
✔ Healthy screen-time balance
✔ Positive body image and healthy eating habits
✔ Supportive environments that encourage physical activity

Protecting children is not only about keeping them safe today.
It is also about giving them the strength, confidence, and health they need for tomorrow.

🦴 Osteoporosis affects millions — but awareness can change outcomes

Osteoporosis is estimated to affect around 4 million men and women in South Africa — yet many people only discover they have poor bone health after a fracture.

At NOFSA, our work is focused on changing that through:

✔ Awareness
✔ Patient support
✔ Education
✔ Research
✔ Fundraising
✔ Lobbying and advocacy

Through our website, social media, newsletters, blogs, media interviews, masterclasses, DXA training, scientific congresses, national guidelines and support groups, NOFSA continues to raise awareness and strengthen understanding around osteoporosis and bone health.

Because stronger bones begin with better knowledge — and better knowledge begins with access to the right information.

Nutrition for Growing Bones

🦴 Strong bones are built at the table too

Childhood and the teenage years are key stages for building peak bone density — the strongest bone foundation the body will carry into adulthood.

Good nutrition plays a powerful role in this process.

Growing bones need:

🥛 Calcium to help build bone structure
☀️ Vitamin D to support calcium absorption
🍳 Protein to support muscle and bone growth
🥦 Micronutrients to help the body function well

For parents and caregivers, this doesn’t have to mean complicated meal plans. Small daily choices matter — balanced meals, nourishing snacks, and encouraging children to understand why food matters for their future health.

Strong bones don’t happen overnight.
They are built through consistent habits, one meal at a time.

🩺 International Nurses Day

Today we honour the nurses who stand at the heart of healthcare — offering skill, compassion, reassurance, and care when patients need it most.

For many people living with, or at risk of, osteoporosis, nurses play an important role in education, guidance, early awareness, and ongoing support.

They help patients feel seen, informed, and empowered to take better care of their health.

At NOFSA, we thank every nurse for the strength they bring to patients, families, and communities every day.

💙 Your care helps others stand stronger.

🌸 Happy Mother’s Day from NOFSA 🌸

Today we celebrate the love, strength, and care that mothers bring to every family.
Mothers spend so much of their lives nurturing others — offering support, comfort, encouragement, and guidance. Today is also a gentle reminder that every mother deserves to care for her own health, strength, and wellbeing too.

At NOFSA, we believe strong women deserve strong bones.

This Mother’s Day, let’s honour the women who hold families together — and encourage them to prioritise their own health for the years ahead.

💗 Celebrating the strength behind every family.

📱 Screen Time, Sitting & Bone Health

Modern childhood often involves far more sitting than previous generations.

Between schoolwork, gaming, phones, tablets, and streaming, children and teenagers may spend long periods inactive — and this can affect more than just fitness.

Less movement means fewer opportunities for bones and muscles to strengthen during the important growing years.

The good news? Small changes can help.

Encourage children and teens to break up sitting time with movement:

✔ Stand up and stretch between study sessions
✔ Take a short walk after screen time
✔ Dance, skip, run, or play outside
✔ Add quick movement breaks throughout the day

Even short bursts of activity can support healthy physical development.

Strong bones are built through daily movement — one active moment at a time. 🦴✨
