The groin lymph nodes play a vital role in draining lymph fluid from your leg.

For many patients, lymphoedema develops after cancer treatment in this area.

This can happen due to:
• Lymph node removal (sentinel node biopsy or full lymph node clearance)
• Radiation therapy affecting the groin or pelvic soft tissues
• Surgical removal of cancer, which can damage nearby lymphatic vessels

All of the above can disrupt, or overload the lymphatic system.

When these pathways are affected, lymph fluid cannot drain properly — leading to swelling in the leg.

✨ Important to understand:
Even if no lymph nodes were removed, swelling can still occur.
• A surgical incision alone can affect lymphatic vessels
• Removing even a single node may impact drainage
• Radiation therapy on its own can alter lymph flow by damaging the soft tissues and vessels

✔️ Swelling may develop months — or even years — after treatment
✔️ Early, appropriate lymphatic care is essential

In some cases, fluorescence-guided mapping can be used before surgery to help identify lymphatic pathways and reduce the risk of long-term damage.
