"Reiki is truly a spiritual discipline, as realizing the importance of taking responsibility for all that you create in your life is indeed one of the keys of Reiki." (Paula Horan)

This past weekend I had the privilege of attuning four new Reiki Level 1 students in the Usui System of Energy Healing. I normally don't teach a course early in January, but I was approached by a student living and working in Barcelona who wanted to do a course in January while in Cape Town visiting family. And as it is when you align yourself with an opportunity that comes up, 3 more students joined this course, which I didn't officially advertise on my website, in the next week after I made it available.

This weekend I was reminded of the importance of emphasising that Reiki is essentially a spiritual practice, sometimes an uncomfortable challenge for some students as they are confronted with their own issues and negative experiences related to past practices of meditation. However, allowing the space to process the challenge that lead to the experience of shame and constriction, provided the opportunity for immediate change and a transformative experience. A powerful moment to witness. In the words of the student: "I came into the course being this person, but I am leaving completely renewed."

It is for this reason that I believe in a 3-month integration period before teaching Level 2. I was recently made aware of a course in my area teaching Level 1 and 2 on one Saturday. Said teachers also offer a Master Level course for half a day. My own Master Level course stretches over two weekends.

Yes, it is possible to teach Reiki in a short period of time, but I regard it as irresponsible practice. As Bronwen and Frans Stiene writes:
"Completing Levels 1 and 2 together in a weekend (some even include Level 3 in this 'package') is pointless and leaves students feeling powerful (temporarily) without actually becoming empowered. The focus here is on achieving levels rather than working with the energy. Reiki is about energy - it is not about pieces of paper with letters on them." If you are interested in learning Reiki, choose your Master Teacher carefully.

My next courses coming up:

๐ŸŒ€ Reiki Level 2 Course: 31 January & 1 February
๐ŸŒ€ Reiki Level 1 Course: 14&15 March.

The second week of the year 2026 is slowly drawing to a close. I've been back in my practice since last Wednesday, the lovely holidays already receding in awareness.

New Year's Resolutions is not something I ever contemplate. They last anyway till the normal mad rush of the year resumes, excuses for upholding an exercise regime becomes easier and a slice of tempting cake in the coffee shop becomes stronger than the superego that says "NO!" I do however like to reflect on the year that lies ahead and envision what I would like to achieve. To be honest, there are no big goals or desires this year. I introduced Sound Healing to my practice towards the end of last year, and would like to see it expand. Other than that, my only wish is to be real, living authentically and simply. In my work, I wish to help my clients connect with their real body selves and letting go of the complicated stuff that clutters and pollute their minds.

We are living in troubling times. How to relate to a world gone mad has been resting on my mind for a long time now. Our planet is in a crisis, as the fires in the Western Cape and now devestating floods in Limpopo point to. Fascism, religious fudamentalism, patriarchy, racism and suppression of the rights of the LGBTQI+ community are all rising at an alarming rate, turning the world into a very unsafe place.

I need to remind myself that the above all lies in my Circle of Concern. I often taught this lesson of Stephen Covey to my mentoring groups in the clinics and to HIV counsellors in the various NGO's that I worked for in the past: if we keep our focus on the Circle of Concern, we easily feel despondend and powerless, because we have little or no control on what is happening in that circle. Hoewever, we have full control on our Circle of Influence, where we should focus. From the Circle of Influence, where we have full control of our attitudes, our choices, our ability to challenge the unacceptable and live with kindness and compassion, we can make a huge impact on our Circle of Concern and bring hope in a sometimes hopeless situation.

Even in our daily Meditation Practice, we can use the Circle of Influence to impact the Circle of Concern. The Lovingkindness Meditation and Tonglen Practice are two examples of this, as they particularly intend to develop the trait of compassion and care. I will be focusing on various versions of these meditations in both my personal practice and in the Meditation Group that gathers Wednesday evenings at my home in Kenridge.

My prayer for 2026 is therefore the words of my favourite version of the Lovingkindness Meditation by Jack Kornfield: "May the power of your heart, of your goodness, of your love, bring that light to the world, and bring freedom to our our lives and to those of all living beings."

Today we had the last Reiki Gathering for the year. I introduced these gatherings to provide further support and learning opportunities for the Reiki Practitioners and Masters that I trained.

We always start the gathering with a meditation followed by Reiju attunements and then the Reiki Current practice shared in a circle. Two group treatments with a tea-break inbetween is next on the programme. We end the morning with a theme discussion. Today we discussed Reiki & Sound Healing and I gave a short demonstration of how I use the Tibetan singing bowls in my Reiki & Sound Healing treatments.

The New Year starts early with two Reiki Courses scheduled for January. I was approached by someone who lives in Spain and wanted to do Reiki Level 1 in January with her mother while visiting for the holidays. In the meantime two more students signed up, so I already have only two places available for the January course. The training schedule for early next year is as follows:

๐ŸŒ€ Reiki Level 1: 17&18 January 2026
๐ŸŒ€ Reiki Level 2: 31 January & 1 February 2026
๐ŸŒ€ Reiki Level 1: 14&15 March 2026

For bookings for treatments and courses, send me a WhatsApp to 083 764 5978.

It is a quiet Sunday evening in McGregor as the intense winds of the past few days have died down. I only hear the sounds of crickets and frogs, and the occasional dog barking in the distance. Every now and then Charlie, one of the resident cats at Temenos Retreat in McGregor, utters a soft sigh of contentment in her sleep where she nestled on my bed for the night.

I reflect on one of the most special retreat weekends that I have ever facilitated at Temenos. This weekend was the second time that I offered the Reiki Retreat: Inspiration, Rejuvenation, Soul-Care, and I shared a profound safe and healing space with Esda and Renรฉ, held with gentleness and ease.

We were blessed with beautiful and warm days, and the intensity of light and colours that struck me when I arrived prevailed throughout the weekend. Our early morning walk in De Krans Nature Reserve brought us to a place of stillness as we connected with our inner landscape through the beauty of Mother Nature surrounding us.

It is well known that cats are drawn to Reiki, and this weekend was proof of it. Just before our morning meditation started in The Well, Lulu, the matriarch of Temenos, wandered in, drank from the well and nestled on one of the meditation cushions, joining our practice with a gentle purr. Later, just as we were about to start the Reiki group treatments, Charlie offered assistance, but absconded soon. She probably needs more practice. ๐Ÿ™‚

The afternoon we did the Reiki Undo (Movement) and Dance practice. Then we witnessed a very special moment. Charlie came along and lay down in front of Renรฉ's feet. Minutes later one of the resident male peacocks arrived and started fanning. We litteraly danced along with the peacock the whole of the remaining 20 minutes of the practice, him fanning the whole time. At some point Charlie stood up, but then ran off when the peacock approached her in what seemed like an invitation to the dance. This was truly a memorable moment.

I designed this retreat to move from group engagement the Saturday to individual reflection and processing the Sunday. After a gentle early morning Tai Chi/Qigong-based movement practice, we walked the labyrinth as a group followed by Penelope Quest's Meeting Your Spirit Guide Meditation. The rest of the morning is dedicated to quiet and creative reflection. After the Sharing Circle, the retreat ended with the Lovingkindness Meditation.

I feel blessed and privileged to be able to do this work.

This afternoon I booked into Temenos Retreat in McGregor to guide to final retreat of the year, Reiki Retreat: Inspiration, Rejuvenation, Soul-Care. As I was preparing and setting up the meeting room, I was struck by the intensity of light, shadows and colours I observed all around me. I trust that my initial observations hold the promise that the two participants and I will this weekend experience the full embodiment of Reiki as described by Penelope Quest: the embodiment of love, light, healing, harmony and balance. Now for a good night's rest and an early rise to start the day with a morning walk in the nearby De Krans Nature Reserve.

This weekend I hosted my first official Tibetan Singing Bowl Sound Journeys. All the spaces in the Saturday and Sunday morning sessions were booked. I am very excited to finally embark on this amazing and powerful journey of Sound Healing and to manifest a long-term dream.

From January I will host these sessions monthly, on Saturday afternoons 15:00 - 16:30 and again Sunday mornings 10:00 - 11:30 on the same weekend. Dates are communicated quarterly and can be viewed on the Sound Healing page on my website. I share the link below. Bookings can be done on my website or by sending me a WhatsApp. Immediate payment of R 300 will secure a booking, as space is limited.

In addition I also offer 90-minute Reiki & Sound Healing sessions at the cost of R 850. Those that made use of my introductory offer in October found the process very powerful and comforting at the same time. Appointments can also be made via my website.

The past weekend I taught my last Reiki Course of the year, Level 2. I welcome Robyn Spacey as newly attuned Reiki Practitioner. It is always an honour and blessing to prepare healers for their journey with Reiki and be witness to their spiritual development. I wish Robyn all the best as her strong psychic abilities will enable her to facilitate powerful healing work for her clients.

This was not the last Reiki activity of the year though. In two weeks time, during the weekend of 21-23 November, I will facilitate a Reiki Retreat at Temenos Retreat in McGregor, and the weekend after will be the last Reiki Gathering of the year for my Level 2 and Master students.

The first courses for 2026 will be:
โš›๏ธ Reiki Level 2: 31 January & 1 February
โš›๏ธ Reiki Level 1: 14&15 March.

Die een wat bly / The one who stays with Grant Van Ster, Shaun Oelf and Daneel van der Walt. Script & Direction Wessel Pretorius and Geselskap. Choreography in collaboration with Natalie Fisher.

When Grant invited us to attend the opening of this show last night at the Baxter Flipside, I accepted without hesitation. We saw it at the Suidoosterfees earlier this year, and it was a theatre highlight then. Seeing it for a second time opened further dimensions in the play for me, and it will remain one of the most powerful theatre experiences to date.

Dance is an art form that transcends language where the intended message is conveyed through movement and gesture, yet here a rich and multi-layered script collaborates with dance and movement to tell the story in a unique and powerful way. The story explores the complex and multi-dimensional facets of the mother-son relationship as a young dancer reflects on his youth after his mother's death. Projections, carefully selected music and the creative use of props enhances the atmosphere. Mythology, in particular the story of Orpheus that led Eurydice from the Underworld, adds further dimensions to the story. Especially the theme of rebirth, as every son reaching adulthood needs to cut the energetic umbilical cord from his mother in order to release her fixated image of him as the boy she raised, before that boy buries him alive.

Grant and Shaun are very close to my heart. Both of them played a significant role in my spiritual journey towards embodied consciousness through dance, first at Jazzart Dance Theatre and later when they established Figure of 8 Dance Theatre. I remember with fondness the often challenging classes in the early days in the upstairs studio at the Youngblood Gallery in Bree Street. I learnt from Grant and Shaun to trust my body, confront my fears, push my limitations, and move with grace and confidence.

I witnessed and experienced the passion, the heart and soul, the care and utmost professionalism that Grant and Shaun put into their work, which is not just work for them, but the life that they breathe. It is also tangible in this production. Please don't miss it. It is on till Saturday 1 November. Book at Webtickets.

REIKI RETREAT
21-23 November 2025
Temenos Retreat in McGregor

This retreat, offered in the beautiful and nurturing environment of Temenos, is for Reiki Practitioners and Masters. As energy healers we often find ourselves depleted and in need of support and nurturing. Taking a retreat is an invaluable part of taking care of ourselves, rest and rejuvenate in order to return to our practices of caring for others with renewed and inspired energy. This retreat aims to provide the space for rest and replenishment, as well as receiving healing from others in a group context, connect with other Reiki healers, and refresh our skills-base through group discussions.

Some feedback from last year's retreat:

"From the first day I felt protected, welcomed and Johann held such a beautiful space for me to grow and heal. I will be for ever grateful for this!"

"The best gift I have given myself this year. Transformative, profound and nourishing to my spirit. I knew Johann's retreat would be of high standard, but I had no idea what a life-changing spiritual journey I would have in one weekend."

Restore, Restory, Rekindle: An Embodiment Retreat
10-12 October 2025

The past few weeks marked one of the most challenging and stressful times of my life. Indeed, the workshop section of this retreat, titled The Neurobiology of Stress & Trauma was this time discussed less theoretical and definitely more from personal experience. I am forever grateful though for mindfulness and embodiment practices that I incorporated early on in my life, which keeps me grounded and this time prevented me from getting stuck in self-limiting narratives marked by victimhood, self-pity and self-blame, a very tempting black hole to disappear into.

Friday afternoon I booked into Temenos Retreat centre along with 3 participants attending this year's retreat. Introductions and the first meditation was followed by dinner and a discussion on the theme "Embodiment". We then ended with my first ever live sound journey using Tibetan Singing Bowls that I will offer from now on during my retreats.

It was an overcast and grey early morning when we set off today for a walk through De Krans Nature Reserve before the first meditation of the day. After the workshop section we were ready for brunch, and then we had some fun with free-style dancing. This was followed by shared hand massages, and then free time till late afternoon. After coffee, I gave the group task pages to reflect on their life-scripts and investigate self-limiting narratives, and to restory these to narratives that reflect wholeness and integration.

We processed the day's experiences after dinner, and ended with a longer sound journey. Tomorrow we will do some more movement practices, walk the labyrinth, then conclude with a creative process and reflect on reintegration practices after the retreat.

Indeed, this retreat is about coming home to our bodies and developing the necessary tools to manage our life challenges from a disposition of awareness and wholeness. Peter Levine writes: "Body awareness is something we want to cultivate and make an intrinsic part of our lives, because living in a body-aware way gives us a sense of aliveness and purpose in all aspects of life. When we're disconnected from the body, we can't be fully present. A meaningful life depends upon a sense of aliveness and presence, both of which spring from intimate contact with internal body states."

MY APPROACH TO COUNSELLING

I choose to hold an integral view of life, therefore honouring every aspect of being human, and it is this disposition that I bring into counselling when I journey with clients. I strive towards creating a therapeutic environment that reflects unconditional acceptance and a safe space for self-expression. I see my role not as the expert with all the answers, but as a companion prepared to journey with my clients in search for better outcomes of problematic life situations. In this regard I draw a lot on the principles of Narrative Therapy which honours the client as the one with authority and knowledge, and draws on the strengths and knowledges of the clientโ€™s life and relationships which is normally not spoken about when the focus is only on the problem story.
