Sleep Issues in ASD: What Every Family Should Know ❤😴

💤 About 53% of children with autism struggle with sleep—whether it’s falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early. Poor sleep can impact attention, learning, and behavior.

✨ Helpful at-home strategies:
🛁 Epsom salt baths (½–1 cup) in warm water—add a drop of lavender oil for extra calm.
📵 Avoid screens for at least an hour before bedtime.
🕰 Create a consistent routine with quiet music, weighted blankets, and a dark, peaceful room.
📡 Reduce EMF exposure by turning off Wi-Fi and unplugging devices at night.
🏃‍♂️ Daily exercise + 💧 good hydration can improve sleep quality.

🩺 If sleep doesn’t improve, talk to your child’s doctor about possible causes like:

▪️Low potassium or iron
▪️Constipation or food sensitivities
▪️Allergies
▪️Vitamin or mineral deficiencies (magnesium, vitamin D, folate)
▪️Enlarged adenoids/tonsils
▪️Seizures or reflux
▪️Side effects from medications

😴Good sleep can make a big difference in health, mood, and daily life. Let’s help our kids get the rest they need! 🌙✨

We are facing a parenting crisis - there is simply no way to sugar coat this!

We are raising children to play in a world that we don’t fully understand ourselves - a world where the skills needed to succeed are unlike anything seen before. The high-IQ student who once held the advantage by memorising facts? - that advantage is GONE. The math and physics savant won’t keep up with the machine who can do it faster and better. The diligent hard worker? Rendered obsolete by automation

And into this new world, we are delivering humans who cannot regulate emotions, miss nuanced signals for connection and display as little creativity as the tablets they consume content on. It is a crisis. Make no mistake.

Babies and toddlers of this generation are being raised in a world where the default soothing tool is a screen, where boredom is outsourced to YouTube, and where the everyday moments that wire the human brain for connection, curiosity, and emotional regulation are being crowded out.

As an OT and parenting expert, I see the red flags everywhere -
* in the toddler who can’t self-soothe.
* the preschooler who melts down when stimulation stops.
* the baby staring at a distracted parent’s still face.

Know this - small, seemingly insignificant moments - the quiet of a cuddle, reciprocal eye contact, shared wonder, a co-regulated tantrum  are the building blocks of the human brain. Without them, we fail our children.

And unless we wake up, AI will do a better job at “life” than our kids will

This isn’t about shaming parents or about parental guilt. It’s about waking up.

Intentionality must be our call to arms. Tech is not inherently bad, but it must come with boundaries, counterweights, and a deep respect for what the developing brain really needs.

If you need to understand this urgency, read these two posts that capture the urgency brilliantly: - read my LinkedIn Post for links

The future of our children depends on what we do now.
Let’s not sugarcoat this.

I’d love to hear your thoughts: How do we come alongside parents to navigate this? How are you doing this in your home?
