A study in China of over 7000 patients with confirmed Covid -19 infection, found that patients with well-controlled blood glucose levels had better outcomes than those with poorly-controlled blood glucose. The well-controlled patients had less need for antiviral medication, antibiotics, corticosteroids, oxygen treatment, and ventilation therapy. Well-controlled patients had an 87% lower risk for death compared to poorly-controlled patients. A study in the United States also found a signficant impact on blood glucose control and mortality risk in Covid-19 infection. Zhu, et al. Cell Metabolism 1 May 2020; Singh, et al. A meta-analysis of 11 clinical trials comparing intermittent versus continuous energy restriction on weight loss and cardiometabolic outcomes found similar effects on the promotion of weight loss and metabolic improvements. Intermittent energy restriction found a slight reduction in fasting insulin concentrations, this was thought to be of uncertain clinical relevance. Since intermittent fasting may necessitate temporary dose reductions of diabetes medications, this may mean it would just be simpler to use continuous energy restriction which does not require dose adjustments, rather than intermittent fasting. It has been reported that exposure to high noise levels leads to increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This occurs via the activation of stress hormones such as cortisol, which reduce pancreatic insulin secretion and reduce the body's sensitivity to insulin. In particular, noise levels around 85 decibels or higher were found to be associated with raised levels of blood glucose. The authors of the article noted that wearing hearing protective gear in very noisy environments may provide protection against the development of diabetes.
