Meet Thandeka, one of the incredible farmers in our Qobo Qobo Essential Oils incubator. Her farming journey began on their family farm, watching her father pour his heart into every crop. His passion inspired her to follow in his footsteps. When she joined Qobo Qobo as a farm administrator, she found a new level of inspiration in essential oils. In 2019, she took the leap to start her own farming business, driven by love and a desire for excellence. Like many farmers, she faced challenges – from market struggles to climate change and the pandemic.

But with Qobo Qobo's support and partnership with Nedbank, things started looking up. Her days start early, ensuring every aspect of the farm runs smoothly. Sustainability is key, both for the environment and her team. Time management, communication, and dedication keeps everyone on track with harvesting and fertigation. Thandeka’s dream? To own land outright, to invest more in her team and equipment, and to expand her impact as a Black woman in farming.

We recently harvested a batch of chillies on our farm as part of our ongoing experimentation with various crops in the essential oils incubator. Diversifying and growing sustainable businesses is at the heart of our mission!

Why do we rotate crops like chillies? Here's why it's a win-win for us and the environment:

Rotating crops helps maintain soil fertility by preventing nutrient depletion and reducing soil-borne diseases. It's like giving our soil a natural boost! Different crops attract different pests. By rotating crops, we naturally disrupt pest cycles, reducing the need for pesticides and promoting ecological balance. Certain crops have varying water needs. By rotating crops, we optimise water usage and promote efficient irrigation practices.

Diversifying crops means we can tap into multiple markets, reducing dependency on a single crop and enhancing our resilience to market fluctuations.

We had a productive meeting and site visit with representatives from the Department of Fishing and Forestry last week. Together, we are exploring a groundbreaking collaboration with their national counterparts to support beneficiaries in the forestry industry who farm eucalyptus trees.

The collaboration aims to establish an incubator/hubs process, empowering these beneficiaries to evolve into sustainable small enterprises. QQ is currently conducting in-depth research into plantation sizes, project viability, and the eucalyptus essential oils market to ensure a successful launch.

We are committed to providing comprehensive support in implementing processes and marketing strategies to get this transformative project off the ground. In return, QQ participants are actively engaged in a skill transfer initiative, planting indigenous trees in Keiskammahoek, Umtata, and other areas of the Eastern Cape where our organisation has impactful projects.

Our vision is to nurture small to medium-scale producers of high-quality eucalyptus essential oils, contributing to both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

We are excited about the results of this inspiring journey which we will be undertaking together!
