Do your knees click?

Have you been led to believe this is bad?

Are you worried that it’s something you should be concerned about?

It’s very normal for your knees (or other joints and soft tissues) to click and most of the time it’s absolutely nothing to worry about.

Joint “Cavitation” is normal and can make a noise when there’s a change in pressure in the synovial fluid and the natural gasses in that fluid, it results in a cavity formation, which causes a sound.

It takes a 20-30 minutes for the gasses to reabsorb, which is why you can’t crack your knuckles again immediately after doing so once.

Any synovial joint can be popped.

Similarly, soft tissues and connective tissue can also make noises as they move over other structures and bony parts.

One of the key things that differentiates normal noises with those that may require further consideration or assessment is the presence of pain.

This doesn’t mean anything sinister or significant is going on, it simply means that maybe it’s worth looking at a little closer.

Particularly at the knee if there’s clunking, locking or giving way with the noise then again, it may be worth seeking an opinion.

But overall, clicking or noises without pain are nothing to be overly concerned with.

Hypermobility syndrome is a term used to describe overly mobile joints which occurs as a result of the protein collagen being more flexible than usual. Hypermobility varies on a spectrum of different…
