FACTS ABOUT DEMENTIA

Dementia is a group of conditions that affect memory, thinking, and the ability to perform everyday activities.

It is not a normal part of aging, though it becomes more common as people grow older.

People living with dementia may experience memory loss, confusion, difficulty with language, changes in mood or behavior, and challenges with problem-solving, all of which can progress over time.

Dementia deeply affects the person living with dementia, their families and caregivers, because of the long-term emotional, physical, and practical support.

Caregivers may face increased stress, fatigue, and feelings of isolation as they adapt to changing roles and responsibilities.

Compassionate care, and supportive environments can help improve quality of life for both individuals living with dementia and those who care for them.

The most difficult aspect of dementia care

It’s not the memory loss.
It’s not the repeated questions.
It’s not the changes in behavior.

This one surprises families because the main problem isn’t memory. It’s the body.

Vascular dementia is often caused by strokes or poor blood flow to the brain. So you might see slower thinking, weakness on one side,
more falls, mood changes.
“Good days and bad days”

And decline often happens in STEPS, not slowly.
So they may seem stable… then suddenly worse.
That’s brain damage from tiny strokes.

And the care plan should include:
Physio
Fall prevention
Blood pressure control
Movement
Not just memory games.

If you treat every dementia like Alzheimer’s, you miss half the problem.
Different cause → different care.

Always ask which type.
