❄️ FLU: FACT vs FICTION ❄️

Winter is here, and influenza (flu) season is upon us. At Stonehill Medical Centre, we're helping you separate myths from facts so you can protect yourself and your loved ones this winter.

🦠 FICTION: "The flu is just a bad cold."
✅ FACT: Influenza is far more serious than the common cold and can cause high fever, body aches, chest symptoms, severe fatigue, pneumonia, and other complications.

🤧 FICTION: "Antibiotics cure the flu."
✅ FACT: Influenza is caused by a virus, so antibiotics will not treat the flu unless there is a secondary bacterial infection.

💉 FICTION: "The flu vaccine gives you flu."
✅ FACT: The flu vaccine cannot cause influenza. Mild side effects such as arm soreness or fatigue may occur as your immune system responds.

🏠 FICTION: "If I don't have a fever, I'm not contagious."
✅ FACT: You can spread influenza before symptoms appear and while symptoms are still mild.

😷 FICTION: "Healthy people don't need to worry about flu."
✅ FACT: Even healthy adults can become seriously ill and may unknowingly pass the virus on to vulnerable family members.

🫖 FICTION: "Vitamin C alone prevents the flu."
✅ FACT: The best protection includes good sleep, proper nutrition, hydration, hand hygiene, annual vaccination, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.

✨ Protect yourself this winter:
* Wash your hands regularly
* Stay home when you're unwell
* Keep hydrated
* Consider your annual flu vaccination
* Seek medical attention if symptoms become severe

Stay healthy this winter with Stonehill Medical Centre.

❄️ WINTER WELLNESS ❄️

As the colder months settle in, we’d like to remind all our patients to take a little extra care of themselves and their loved ones this winter.

Winter often brings an increase in colds, flu, chest infections, and general fatigue — but small daily habits can make a big difference in keeping healthy.

Here are a few simple winter wellness tips:
* Stay warm and dress in layers
* Keep hydrated, even when you don’t feel thirsty
* Prioritise rest and sleep
* Eat nutritious, immune-supporting foods
* Wash hands regularly to reduce the spread of illness
* Keep up to date with chronic medication and vaccinations
* Don’t ignore persistent symptoms or breathing difficulties

If you are feeling unwell, remember that early assessment and treatment can help prevent complications.

Our team is here to support you throughout the season and help keep you and your family healthy this winter. ☕️❄️

Wishing all our patients a safe, warm, and healthy winter season. 💙

PCOS Has a New Name: PMOS

An exciting medical breakthrough, explained by Dr Maria Chrysostomou, BHSc, BHsc (Hons), MBBCh (WITS), DipObst(CMSA)

Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) is now increasingly being referred to as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) — a name that better reflects the true nature of this complex, whole-body condition.

For years, the term “PCOS” focused mainly on ovarian cysts, despite many women never developing cysts at all. The updated terminology highlights that this condition is not just about the ovaries — it involves hormones, metabolism, insulin resistance, inflammation, fertility, mental health, and long-term overall wellbeing.

✨ PMOS recognises:
* Hormonal imbalance
* Insulin resistance & metabolic dysfunction
* Irregular cycles & ovulation issues
* Fertility challenges
* Weight struggles & inflammation
* Hair thinning, acne & unwanted facial hair
* Mental health impacts including anxiety & fatigue
* Increased long-term risks such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, sleep disorders, and endometrial concerns

Approximately 1 in 8 women worldwide are affected.

The name change aims to:
✔️ Improve understanding and awareness
✔️ Encourage earlier diagnosis
✔️ Validate women whose symptoms were previously dismissed
✔️ Promote a more holistic, long-term treatment approach
✔️ Shift focus toward metabolic health and insulin resistance — often central drivers of the condition

Importantly, many women with PMOS/PCOS:
* May not have ovarian cysts
* May have “normal” blood tests initially
* Experience symptoms very differently from one another

PMOS is not “just a period problem.”
It is a lifelong endocrine and metabolic condition that deserves compassionate, personalised care.

💚 Different name. Same strength. Better understanding.

❤️ New Life-Saving Equipment at Stonehill Medical Centre ❤️

At Stonehill Medical Centre, your safety is always our priority — and we’re proud to share that both our Stonehill Crossing and Dunvegan branches are now equipped with brand-new AED portable SERE-Heart Defibrillators.
These life-saving devices are designed to assist in emergencies involving cardiac arrest, for both adults and children, including paediatric cases. Fully portable and easy to operate, our AEDs ensure that immediate care can be provided right where it’s needed most.
