Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

SLE is a chronic systemic autoimmune disorder that exhibits a wide range of clinical signs and symptoms. SLE is characterised by periods of flare-ups and remittance of the disorder.

SLE can develop due to genetic defects, UV radiation, smoking, infections (viral or bacterial) and some medications. SLE is more common in females than in males.

The DNA damage causes cell death releasing nuclear bodies, however, due to ineffective clearing of the damaged genetic material which increases the number of nuclear antigens in the bloodstream. This increase in nuclear antigens triggers an immune response stimulating antinuclear antibody production which binds to the antigens forming immune complexes. These complexes deposit themselves into tissues such as kidneys, skin, joints and heart.

Sign and symptoms of SLE are fever, joint pain, rash on sun-exposed areas. Other symptoms and signs are weight loss, ulcers in the mouth and nose, anaemia, proteinuria, endo- and myocarditis.

To diagnosis SLE, 4 or 11 criteria must be met. Conventional treatment comprises of long-term therapy, NSAIDs and corticosteroids.

Other inventions include the avoidance of sun exposure, healthy lifestyle of physical exercise with a balanced diet and smoking cessation.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. The inflammation can be caused by viral, bacterial, fungal infections or allergic reactions. Poor drainage of the sinuses due to polyps or a deviated septum, allergic rhinitis, overuse of nasal decongestants or infection are all causes of sinusitis.

Some common symptoms associated with sinusitis are:
Pain or headache
Referred pain to upper incisor and canine teeth.
Unilateral nasal congestion
Bad breath (halitosis)
Postnasal drip,
Depending on the source of sinusitis, fever may be associated with tenderness over the sinuses.

Common supplements that can assist with sinusitis are Vitamin C, Zinc, Colloidal silver, Garlic, turmeric and even the use of eucalyptus oil used in as steam inhalation. All these supplements can be used in conjunction with homeopathic remedies in the treatment of sinusitis.

Stress can shorten your expected life span 😱 Chronic stress has shown to be a contributing factor to the development of various chronic diseases.
As mentioned in our blog about stress, we discussed some of the sympathetic nervous system mechanism responses to stress. Chronically, stress may cause inflammation on the brain potentially leading to or exacerbating depression 😢.

Chronic stress can affect many more aspects of our health. Chronic stress has shown to increase oxidative stress which can shorten telomeres (shoe-lace like caps at the end of our DNA which prevents our DNA from unravelling), causes blockages to build-up quicker in our arteries regardless of diet, negatively affect cellular metabolism as well as our gut microbiome.

But stress has shown to be based on perception. What do I mean? A study measuring the levels of stress and telomere length on caregivers of children with autism found that the more stress the caregivers reported feeling, the shorter the length of their telomeres. Interestingly though, there was no objective measure for the stress levels and so all were subjective - meaning it was their perceptions. Another study measuring cortisol levels (stress hormone) of public speaking students found that those that were trained to perceive stressful situations a self-enhancing had a moderate cortisol response as opposed to those students (high cortisol levels) that did not receive the training.

Stress can definitely be managed and leveraged to enhance yourself. But if you are finding that you are not coping with your current levels of stress look for outlets that might be beneficial to you such as meditation, Tai Chi, exercise and lifestyle modifications.

There are also various homeopathic and herbal supplements that can be used to help adapt to stress easier. If you would like to know more about our services that may assist you in dealing with your stress please contact us.

A headache is a pain located in the head either being above the eyes or the ears, behind the head or in the back of the upper neck. Headaches can have many causes. A headache is considered primary if it is due to no other cause and secondary if it is due to another underlying condition.

Headaches are common and generally not often associated with serious underlying conditions. Most headaches are due to strain on the muscles in the neck or head or congestion of blood vessels which supply them.

The underlying cause of a headache may be associated with anxiety, physical tension, lack of sleep, excess caffeine, allergies, low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), high blood pressure, sinusitis and drug side effects to name a few.

There are different types of headaches:

Sinus headache - pain is located behind forehead and or cheekbones.
Cluster - pain is in and around one eye.
Tension - pain like a band squeezing the head.
Migraines - pain, nausea and visual changes are typical of the classic form.

Some common methods on reducing the occurrence of headaches are to increase daily exercise, improve the quality of your sleep, adding extra vitamin B3 to your diet and massage to release tension.

If headaches consistently persist and are worse than any other you have had before, please consult your healthcare professional.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease, particularly the degeneration of the articular cartilage covering the underlying bone. Once the cartilage has been removed, this exposes the underlying bone creating friction in the joint, promoting inflammation and destruction of the joint itself.

Osteoarthritis is a common joint disorder and occurs frequently in patients over 65 years old but may also occur in younger patients as a result of previous trauma, developmental conditions, obesity and diabetes mellitus. The condition has a slow progression by which time the joint has already undergone structural damage. The most common areas for women are in their hands and knees, and for men in their hips.

Osteoarthritis affects more commonly the articular cartilage. In a healthy joint, the articular cartilage provides a smooth surface with synovial fluid to provide friction-free movement. The articular cartilage also provides cushioning for the underlying bones, absorbing shock and the weight of the body.

The healthy cartilage undergoes constant degeneration and replacement. The chondrocytes in the cartilage aid in maintaining cartilage creation and degeneration. The problem arises when this function is inhibited leading to excessive degeneration i.e. osteoarthritis. The functioning of the chondrocytes can be affected by several factors - mechanical stress, ageing, prolonged elevated oestrogen levels and genetics.

The conventional treatment of osteoarthritis is with the use of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories), exercise, weight loss, walking aids, physiotherapy and if the condition is severe enough joint replacement.

Homeopathically, osteoarthritis can also be treated with remedies such as Rhus tox, Arnica, Bryonia and Ledum to name a few. Treatment can also include biopuncture to aid in reducing inflammation and cartilage degeneration.

Supplements can be prescribed to assist the body either to slow the degeneration and or halt it with such supplements as chondroitin and glucosamine. Lifestyle modification also plays an important role such as healthy nutrition with an emphasis on anti-inflammatory foods (for example whole food plant-based), regular exercise and reducing daily stress levels.

Arnica Montana (also known as mountain daisy or fall herb) comes from the Compositae family of plants. These plants are grown along mountainsides all over the world.

Arnica has been used for muscles soreness and stiffness for centuries, especially in mountainous regions. Many people today use arnica extracts in massage oils and gels for sore and tired muscles and is a common ingredient in many sport massage oils.

Arnica is given homoeopathically for blunt injuries, bruises and mechanical injuries. Arnica can also be used for concussions and any head traumas, as well as any dislocations, to assist in the healing process.

Arnica can also be indicated for excessive fatigue, post-operatively, for shock and has been used in cases of stroke, angina and gout.

Always consult a registered homeopath before taking any remedies.

Exercise and daily physical activity have crucial benefits to our health - not only to improve fitness and overall physical strength but to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, all-cause mortality and depression.

A meta-analysis in the JAMA Cardiology found that higher levels of inactivity or sedentary behaviour such as sitting for extended periods directly increased the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Similarly, another meta-analysis found that people having a greater number of hours of daily-sitting time had a direct and increased risk of dying from all-causes of death. The study showed a significant increase in risk for adults sitting for 7 hours or more per day.

A meta-analysis in the Journal of Translational Psychiatry found an association between sedentary behaviour (sitting for specific periods of time) and depression. The study specifically found that mentally passive sedentary behaviours, like watching tv, working on computers or reading, could increase the risk of depression.

To mitigate the risks of sedentary behaviours it is recommended to incorporate at least 30 minutes of moderate or 15 minutes of vigorous daily exercise to your routine, such as a brisk walk, stationary bike, swimming or any activity that you enjoy and will get you active.

Also, you can become proactive - if your occupation requires long hours of sitting then getting up from your desk every hour to walk around or standing for 10-15 minutes will aid to decrease the associated risk. At home whilst watching tv, you can get up during commercials to help mitigate any of the risks associated with sedentary behaviour.

To recap, be mindful of how long you are sitting each day - incorporate exercise into your daily routine and get up every so often from your desk or couch. Stay active and stay healthy.
