Nappy Run: A Campaign that provides dignity and inclusion for Children with Disabilities by National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD)

The campaign raises awareness about children with disabilities and encourage the donation of children’s nappies and adult incontinence products throughout South Africa. Children (and adults) with disabilities often have a high need for nappies t

hrough childhood and beyond; requiring the use of nappies into their teen and adult years.

“Without a nappy, children are often denied dignity, comfort, freedom of movement, and their health is compromised.” Says Therina, the National Director at the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities. We need your support, the database of individuals and Centres is larger than before. The NCPD makes a humble, but urgent call to all in South Africa to support its nappy collection drive by donating nappies, larger than standard baby sizes, or by making a monetary (Nappy Rands) donation towards the purchasing of nappies. Donate Nappy Rands online or drop-off nappies at one of our nationwide drop-off points. All details and donation links and drop-off points are on our website at http://nappyrun.org.za/

🐣 ✨ Every child deserves the joy of an Easter egg hunt. But many children with disabilities are still excluded from the simple joys of childhood. At NCPD, we’re working to build a South Africa where no child is left behind, not at Easter, and not in life. 💜

Human Rights Day Message

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As we commemorate Human Rights Day, I am honoured to reach out to you.

Today, we celebrate the inherent dignity and equal rights of all members of our human family. For persons with disabilities, this day holds special significance as we continue our journey toward a world where accessibility, inclusion, and respect are not exceptional accommodations but fundamental expectations and rights.

The universal right to participate fully in society knows no exceptions. Every path equitable, every inclusive policy enacted, and every mind opened to understanding brings us closer to the world we envision—one where disability is recognized as a natural part of human diversity.

On this meaningful day, I invite you to join us in recommitting to the principles of equality; equity and dignity for all. Together, we are already effecting meaningful impact. Let’s double that!

With warm regards and gratitude for your continued support,

Therina Wentzel

What Nappy Run is All About

South Africans are all too familiar with the concept of fundraising drives for many worthy causes. However a national campaign to receive donations of nappies or money to buy nappies, is a first for the country Nappy Run is an annual national campaign of the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD). The idea was born from the heartfelt recognition of the dire and widespread need for nappies for children with disabilities. Bowel and urinary incontinence is inherent to many types of disabilities while the general public is ill-informed on this subject. Society's response to the circumstances and needs of children with disabilities, in poor communities especially, is vastly inadequate. People can't care and they can't get involved if they don't know and don't understand. We want to change this lack of public awareness with Nappy Run as much as we want to provide nappies to these children. Nappy Run takes place annually over October and November with the highlight of the campaign being Nappy Run Fun Run Events. A Nappy Run Fun Run is a family fun run/walk/wheel/stroll in support of the cause of children with disabilities and an opportunity for the public to make a stand against the widespread denial of the rights of these children, society’s most exposed and vulnerable group. The main Nappy Run Fun Run takes place every year on the first Saturday of November at the Johannesburg Zoo at 08h30. (Registration starts at 07h00).

The nappy is a simple but dire and essential need of children with disabilities. Without nappies, children’s dignity, comfort, health, mobility and freedom of movement are compromised. Yet, many children have to go without nappies because they are expensive and not affordable for most families of children with disabilities, These severely marginalised children have a disproportionately high need for nappies and require them for longer periods than non-disabled children. They often need nappies into their teen and even adult years.

The nappy is a symbol of the most basic needs of children with disabilities that are unmet, and also a symbol of the denial of even their most fundamental rights. The governments is under constitutional obligation to provide nappies and assistive devices to children with disabilities as part of basic health care but it is failing dismally in providing in these basic needs and rights. While the NCPD is advocating for children to access these fundamental rights through government provisioning, we cannot sit idly and watch the children being “wet” going without nappies.

Donations for nappies can be made online from the Nappy Run website throughout the year.
