👁️ Glaucoma: Frequently Asked Questions
From The Eye Care Centre, Edenvale

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can damage your vision slowly without noticeable symptoms. It affects the optic nerve and, if left untreated, can lead to permanent vision loss. The good news is that early detection and treatment can help protect your sight.

Here are some of the most common questions we receive about glaucoma:

🔹 What are the symptoms of glaucoma?
Most forms of glaucoma have no early warning signs. As the disease progresses, you may notice gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision.
In rare cases, acute angle-closure glaucoma can occur suddenly, causing:
• Severe eye pain
• Headache
• Blurred vision
• Nausea
This is a medical emergency and requires immediate care.

🔹 Who is at risk?
Anyone can develop glaucoma, but risk increases if you:
• Are over the age of 60
• Have a family history of glaucoma
• Are of African or Hispanic/Latino descent
• Have high eye pressure

🔹 Can vision lost from glaucoma be restored?
Unfortunately, vision loss from glaucoma is permanent. This is why regular comprehensive eye exams are essential to detect glaucoma early and prevent further damage.

🔹 What is normal eye pressure?
The average eye pressure is about 15 mmHg, with a typical range between 10–21 mmHg.
However, glaucoma can occur even with normal eye pressure, and some people with higher pressure may not develop the disease.

🔹 How is glaucoma treated?
Treatment focuses on lowering eye pressure to prevent further damage and may include:
• Prescription eye drops
• Laser treatments
• Surgical procedures

🔹 Does lifestyle affect glaucoma?
Healthy habits can help support eye health:
✔ Regular exercise may help lower eye pressure
✔ Avoid smoking
✔ Limit excessive caffeine
✔ Avoid sleeping with pressure on your eyes
✔ Certain yoga poses that place your head below your heart may increase eye pressure

🚨 When should you see a doctor urgently?
Seek immediate medical care if you experience:
• Severe headache
• Sudden eye pain
• Blurred vision
• Halos around lights

👁️ Protect your vision with regular eye examinations. Early detection is the best defence against glaucoma.

👀 Is Your Child Struggling to See Clearly?
Many children today spend hours on phones, tablets, and computers.

This can lead to vision problems that often go unnoticed.

⚠️ Watch for these warning signs:

• Squinting at screens or the board
• Holding devices very close
• Frequent headaches
• Sitting too close to the TV
• Rubbing their eyes often

Children rarely say “I can't see properly.”

A simple eye test can detect problems early and help protect their learning and development.

👓 Our children’s eye exams check for:

✔ Vision clarity
✔ Eye strain from screens
✔ Early short-sightedness (myopia)
✔ Eye coordination issues
