Sometimes a psychology session may run a little longer than expected. This is not due to poor planning or a lack of respect for anyone’s time, but rather because some moments in therapy require extra care.

Certain sessions involve intense emotions, distress, or unexpected crises. When a patient becomes overwhelmed, experiences a panic response, or touches on deeply painful material, it would be clinically inappropriate — and potentially harmful — to abruptly end the session simply because the clock has run out. In these moments, the psychologist’s priority is to help the patient feel emotionally safe and grounded before leaving the room.

Every patient’s needs are different. Some sessions follow a steady and contained process, while others require additional time to stabilise emotions, ensure safety, or support a patient through a vulnerable breakthrough. Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process, and flexibility is sometimes necessary to provide ethical and compassionate care.

That said, psychologists are very mindful of other patients’ time and do their best to manage sessions responsibly. When delays occur, they are unintentional and based solely on clinical judgment and duty of care.

Your understanding and patience in these situations are deeply appreciated, and every effort is always made to minimise inconvenience while maintaining the highest standard of care for everyone.💟
