If your child or teenager has myopia or near-sightedness, spectacles can be prescribed to improve their vision. Some special types of eye glasses can also control the progression, or worsening, of childhood myopia.

The bad news is that standard distance spectacles do nothing to slow down the worsening of vision that occurs in kids and teens
with myopia. The good news is that special types of spectacle lenses can control the progression of myopia and give kids more stable vision between their eye exams.

Digital devices and screen time can impact your child's vision. Studies have shown a link to increased risk of myopia (or nearsightedness) in children, which causes progressively worsening far vision.

Encourage your child to take frequent breaks from reading and screen time.
Teach them the 20/20 rule: look away from
their screens or books, across the room or out of a window, every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds.

Research says that spending time outdoors can help kids’ vision develop normally, reducing the risk of myopia, or short-sightedness.

Myopia causes blurred far vision, and is
occurring more in today’s kids, due to reduced outdoor time and more time spent on close-up vision tasks like digital screens.

In addition to promoting healthy vision, outdoor time also benefits your child's physical and mental health.
Protection from the sun and UV exposure is also important for kids.

WHAT IS MYOPIA?

Have you heard about myopia?
This eye disorder affects millions of people worldwide, causing blurred distance vision.
It is also known as short-sightedness or near-sightedness.
Myopia often starts in childhood, where it progressively worsens and causes frequent changes in vision.
But a pair of glasses isn't the whole story.

Higher levels of myopia increase the risk of eye diseases and vision problems in adulthood.
If your child already wears glasses, you can do something to protect their vision and eye health. If they don't you can assess their risk of developing myopia.
