The "Nature Pill" & Cortisol 🌿💊
New research into Environmental Psychology has identified the "Nature Pill." Studies show that spending just 20 to 30 minutes sitting or walking in a place that makes you feel connected to nature significantly drops your cortisol (stress hormone) levels.
The benefit peaks at 30 minutes—after that, you still get the rewards, but that first half-hour is the biological "sweet spot" for an instant nervous system reset!
"The soul cannot thrive in the absence of nature." — Carl Jung
Self-Care Signature:
Find a "green spot" today for 20 minutes—no phone, just you and the leaves. 🌳
I am deserving of a 20-minute reset. ✨

"Bi-lateral Movement" (Walking for Your Brain) 🚶♂️🧠
🧪We often think of walking as just a way to get from A to B, or perhaps just a bit of physical exercise. But did you know there is a specific blessing in the simple, rhythmic "left-right-left" movement of your feet?
Modern neurobiology in 2026 confirms the power of Bi-lateral Stimulation. When you walk, you are engaging both sides of your body in a steady rhythm, which forces the two hemispheres of your brain to communicate more effectively. This rhythmic "cross-talk" acts like a digestive system for your mind—it helps process "stuck" emotions and lowers the intensity of stressful thoughts without you having to "think" your way through them. It’s a natural, built-in way to unknot a busy mind.
🌊 With every step, I am moving through my heavy feelings.
👣Try a "rhythmic walk" today—focus on the left, right, breathe, repeat.
🌳Your body knows how to process what your mind cannot.
We believe that healthy communities are built on healthy individuals. That’s why we don’t just work behind closed doors—we step out into the community to facilitate growth, communication, and resilience through our Workshops and Staff Development sessions.
Investing in your team’s mental health is the best way to ensure long-term success. 💼
What We Offer: 🎓
From our "Care for the Caregivers" programmes to workshops like "Facing Obstacles Together," we help teams and groups navigate the unique pressures of South African life. Whether you're a school, an NGO, or a corporate team, our workshops are designed to be informal, welcoming, and deeply practical—focusing on communication, empathy, and collective healing.
Whether "family" means the people you were born to, the friends you’ve chosen, or the community around you, today is about the blessing of connection.
Jesus taught us the importance of loving our neighbour and building a "family" through compassion and support.
Today, we celebrate the relationships that hold us up.
🤝Healthy relationships are the backbone of our well-being. Whether you’re navigating family dynamics or looking to strengthen your bonds, we are here to support your relational health.
Self-Care for Today:
Reach out to one person today just to say, "I’m glad you’re in my life." 📞
Practice a "20-second hug" with a loved one today to share the calm. 🫂
HAPPY EASTER – "He Has Risen" - The Hope of Renewal ✨
Happy Easter! Today we celebrate the ultimate story of hope—that after the darkest night, there is always a sunrise. "He has risen" is a powerful reminder that transformation is possible and that new life can emerge from even the most challenging circumstances. It’s a day to celebrate resilience and the light that returns to our lives. ☀️
🤝 At our centre, we see the "Easter" moment in every person who chooses to begin again. Therapy is a process of renewal, helping you rediscover the joy and life that may have felt lost.
Self-Care for Today:
I am capable of renewal and deserving of a fresh start. 🌟
No matter how long the winter, spring always finds a way. 🌷
Spend 10 minutes in the morning sun today to soak in the feeling of a new beginning. 🌅
Good Friday is a day of deep reflection. In the story of Jesus, this was a moment of heavy silence and sacrifice. In our own lives, we often shy away from the "heavy" moments, but there is a profound healing in being still with our struggles.
Today, we honour the strength found in vulnerability and the courage it takes to sit with the difficult parts of our journey.
🤝Counselling often begins in these quiet, reflective spaces. It’s about acknowledging the weight we carry so that we can eventually move toward healing.
Self-Care for Today:
I am allowed to be still and honour my journey, even the difficult parts. ✨
You don’t have to rush through the "Friday" moments of your life. 🌸
What is one thing you can set down today to give your heart some rest? 🕊️
The Blessing of "Soft Fascination" ☁️🦋
🧪 In our busy 2026 lives, we often use "directed attention" (focusing hard on screens or tasks), which leads to mental fatigue. New research highlights the blessing of Soft Fascination—the act of looking at things that gently hold our attention without effort, like clouds moving, shadows dancing, or a flickering candle. This "effortless focus" actually allows the brain’s executive system to recover and lowers anxiety.
🕊️ Spend 3 minutes today just watching the clouds or the way light hits a wall. ☁️
☁️ Affirmation: I give my mind permission to drift and rest. ✨
✨Encouragement: Not every moment needs your "hard" focus. 🌸

The "Social Baseline" Theory 🤝🧬
Human beings are "obligatory gregarious" creatures.
Social Baseline Theory suggests that our brains actually expect other people to be around to help us manage our emotions. When we are alone, our brain works "harder" to stay safe and regulated. When we are with a "safe person," our brain literally offloads its metabolic load to them. This is why a problem shared truly feels like a problem halved—it is a biological reality!
"The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed." — Carl Jung
Self-Care Signature:
You were never meant to carry it all by yourself. ❤️
Who is the "safe person" who makes your brain feel like it can finally rest? 🫂
I am strong enough to ask for help when the load is heavy. ✨

The "Wall-Push" Power Minute 💪🧘
(Based on Proprioception and Grounding)
The Challenge: 🌳
Feeling a bit "floaty" or stuck in your head? This weekend, we’re using our Proprioception (our 6th sense!) to get back into our bodies.
Find a Wall: Stand facing a sturdy wall and place your palms flat against it. 🧱
The Power Push: Push as hard as you can for 30 seconds, as if you’re trying to move the whole house! Feel the muscles in your arms and legs engage. 🦶
The Release: Step back and notice how much more "solid" and grounded you feel in your feet. ⚓
Your Task: Share a "Strong" emoji (💪) if you tried the power push to quieten a noisy mind! 🧠🤫
Self-Care for the Weekend: 🕊️
Affirmation: I am grounded, I am strong, and I am here. ✨
Encouragement: You don’t have to "think" your way out of anxiety; sometimes you just need to move your way out. 🌸
Suggestion: Try this before a big meeting or a difficult conversation to feel more "anchored." ⚓

The Family Counselling Centre was founded in response to the overwhelming need for affordable and professional counselling in the South Peninsula. Families are struggling with the effects of divorce, financial strain, drug and alcohol abuse, trauma and disability. The variety of cultures in the “Far South”, the economic climate, together with the ever-increasing pressures of school and work, are impacting negatively on individuals and families.
We started our story in March 2015 in a garage on the hillside of Fish Hoek. We soon moved to Valyland Centre and slowly over 3 years expanded from sharing one room with another practitioner to occupying 3 rooms at Valyland. The vision right from the start was all about serving the community of the “far south” and we aim to remain true to this as we grow.
Initially the focus was only on counselling and providing a save space for the individual and families who seek assistance with their struggles. This remains our priority however we have added other aspects to our services. We now also provide workshops and talks on various topics. We support local social workers and volunteers working for NGO’s in our area by offer staff development and counselling to the teams who provide essential services to our community.
The centre aims to provide professional yet affordable services covering the specific needs of each individual client. We have a team of professionals to assist and guide you and your family towards relational health and well-being. Our team currently consists of counsellors, a social worker, educational psychologist, family lawyer, financial adviser and other additional practitioners we can call on if the need arises.
