International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure & Brain Monitoring

International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure & Brain Monitoring Join us in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa from 14-18 November 2022 for the 18th International Sym

A Word from our Chair, Dr. Ursula Rohlwink....

It is my great pleasure to welcome the ICP meeting to Cape Town in 2022, taking place for the first time on the African continent. Africa is the ancient birthplace of humankind, and so this meeting offers us the chance to return to our origins and taste our shared history. Importantly, it also offers us the occasion for expansion, not only geographic

ally, but in the application of the vast knowledge base accumulated through the work of the ICP community to the African context. This may be relevant to current topics like neurotrauma and hydrocephalus, but also novel topics like brain infection. Africa offers the ICP community the opportunity to examine how our science and skill set can have broader reach, and the ICP meeting offers Africa an opportunity to be exposed to innovative ways of investigating and treating neuropathologies. On the very edge of the African continent beautiful Cape Town offers the perfect venue for the discussion of ideas that boldly reset scientific boundaries. Our meeting will be hosted in the intimate setting of the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business conference centre, with tiered levels of presentation space to allow as much contact or distance as required. Under the watchful gaze of one of the 7 Wonders of Nature, Table Mountain, we hope that ICP 2022 will be the moment to come together once more and celebrate humanity’s most magnificent facet, the brain, in this meeting about “Exploring the Edge!”

We are so honored to have Dr. Peter Smielewski (Brain Physics Lab, University of Cambridge) lead our ICM+ Neuromonitoring and data analysis pre-conference workshop on the 13th of November. This is incredibly fitting as Dr. Smielewski was part of the team that developed the software for the first version on ICM+ that launched back in 2004!

We are beyond thrilled to welcome Dr Adriana Marais as one of our invited speakers. Her award-winning PhD and postdoctoral work in quantum biology focused on photosynthesis and the origins of the building blocks of life in space.

In 2019 she founded Proudly Human and leads the Off-world project, that launched a series of habitation experiments in some of the most extreme environments on Earth to prepare for life on the Moon, Mars and beyond. These projects aim to encourage companies to develop technology for sustainability, skills development, boost research for technology towards off-grid functionality and more.

As we explore the notion of pushing the boundaries, we look forward to Adriana's contribution at this year’s ICP conference!

Dr Ursula Rohlwink serves as our chair for the upcoming conference. Here she is standing with a miniature model of the UCT Graduate School of Business - the venue where the conference will be held.

The Division of Paediatric Neurosurgery here at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital is one of the few facilities on the African continent that makes use of the ICM+ software and which has contributed to our understanding of intracranial dynamics.

Dr Rohlwink has been closely involved with our ability to carry out clinical neuroscience research and therefore incredibly fitting that she leads this first meeting on the continent.
