Understanding food labels to make smart food and snack selections for people living with diabetes

Are you constantly seeking out snacks that won’t cause a spike in your glucose levels that will get you through the day without feeling hungry?

Sometimes we tend to go for meals or snacks on a busy day that are not the healthiest choice. Some food items might indicate ‘no added sugar’ or sugar-free but it does not mean that they do not contain carbohydrates.

Always look at both the calories and the carbohydrates to make an informed decision.
Carbohydrates will affect your glucose level, and calorie-dense meals won’t benefit your weight. By simply scanning your FreeStyle Libre sensor, you can easily see the effect that meals and snacks have on your glucose levels.

Now you can have stress-free meals and snacks and see less glucose fluctuations.

Always remember,
1 slice bread worth of calories = 300KJ
1 slice bread worth of carbs= 15g carbs

Look at some of the snack swaps that indicate the carb content, illustrated as slices of bread or teaspoons of sugar
