Breathing is so natural we often forget how important breathing is. From the moment we are born we had to gasp for air to take our first breath to ensure we keep ourselves alive naturally. When meditating we are required to take deep breaths in and out to slow down the chaos in our mind and clear the fog in our heads.
Then we apply different breathing techniques and methods to relax, and we can do this with our without breathing.
Some techniques are more intense and rapid, depending on the technique used.
When a person is relaxed, they breathe through their nose in a slow, even and gentle way.
Deliberately copying a relaxed breathing pattern seems to calm the nervous system that controls the body’s involuntary functions.
Controlled breathing techniques can assist with:
lowering blood pressure and heart rate
reduces levels of stress hormones in the blood
reduces lactic acid build-up in muscle tissue
balances levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood
improves immune system functioning
increases physical energy
increases feelings of calm and wellbeing.
