As we go into Autumn, a quieter, more contemplative time when the seasons demand that we reap what we have sown, we start to quieten down for the winter. Winter is a time of hibernation, perhaps cocooning quietly at home while we gather our energy, for the next cycle when Spring finally arrives.
Currently, I find myself contemplating health, the medical profession, the rise in Functional Doctors within the medical profession and Kinesiology. I have never been one for the medical model, which in acute issues is lifesaving, but for many every day issues, suppresses our bodies responses and ignore the intelligence of our being. Are our bodies so broken that we need antibiotics for a cold, or vaccines yearly for flu?
What I have realised over the 36 years of teaching is that our bodies work beautifully and intelligently. And this is what most people don’t understand, and what Functional Medicine and Kinesiopractic® agree on beautifully. The body doesn’t break. It adapts. And it adapts always in the best way it can with what it has. Nothing in the body works in isolation. It always works in relationship! In relationship to other systems, organs, emotions, thoughts, meridians, and so much more. And this is why the rise of Functional Medicine Doctors is such a wonderful thing!
Functional medicine Doctors work with patterns in the body. i.e they work with the relationship between different organs and systems and how they act and interact with each other. (alopathic Medicine, on the other hand, tends to work from a mechanistic model. i.e you have heart arrhythmia then you may be prescribed statins) Functional Doctors know, for example, that the adrenals, thyroid and insulin work in relationship. In other words, if insulin is high, then adrenaline is also high and the thyroid output is lowered, possibly leading to weight gain. And of course, if adrenaline is high, then insulin is also high and thyroid output is lowered, again, possibly leading to weight gain. While most medical doctors would check thyroid function, they may not also check for adrenal and insulin issues.
So what does that look like in real life? Let's call it the “I’m Fine, I Just Need Coffee” pattern. This is the classic - You’re tired. You’re wired. You’re craving sugar like it’s your personality.
What’s actually happening? Your blood sugar is up and down (when we are tired we tend to crave stimulants, typically instant sugary food), which stresses your adrenals (Kidney), which eventually tells your thyroid to slow everything down. Because from the body’s perspective: “We are not thriving, we are surviving.” So it pulls up the handbrake. The body does this not to punish you but to protect you.
And here is another scenario. So many people come to me complaining that no matter what they eat, they seem to have a reaction to all food - eczema, stomach pain, nausea etc. Does your gut just hate you? Nope, It’s overwhelmed, often because your boundaries have been crossed, physically, emotionally, or energetically. (and of course, this means that you have not set boundaries or you have allowed them to be crossed) So now your digestion struggles, your immune system becomes reactive, you have a leaky gut (increased intestinal permeability, is a condition where the intestinal lining becomes damaged, allowing bacteria, toxins, and undigested food particles to "leak" into the bloodstream) you brain gets foggy. It feels like you have gut issues when the underlying issue may be that you don’t feel safe. Medical doctors may prescibe PPI’s or antihistamines. Functional doctors would recommend supplements to repair the intestinal permeability and perhaps suggest a change of diet and not eating certain foods.
As Kinesiopractors® we wonder “Why did the body choose this adaptation?” because once you understand that, everything changes. In this case, boundaries may come up as the main issue, there may be foods that need to be avoided for a time or we may suggest, through muscle testing, that supplements are needed as support. Because in Kinesiology protocols, we always follow the muscle testing, allowing the intelligence of the subconscious and body to lead the way.
So the bottom line is that your body is not broken, it is just having to prioritise surviving over thriving. The body is the messenger, and when the body is under stress, it makes a very intelligent decision. It chooses survival.
Your fatigue is not a failure. Your anxiety is not random. Your hormone imbalance is not bad luck.
They are all part of a perfectly coordinated survival response. The body is always doing the best it can with the stress it has been given.
So Where Do We Start?
Not with the symptom but with the priority. Because when you address the right thing, in the right order, the body does what it has always known how to do, it heals.
And this is why the students of the Specialised Kinesiopractic® College of South Africa are so amazed by the results. It truly does sometimes seem like a miracle has taken place. How can someone that had eczema for years have their skin clear up in just a few days and stay that way just by working with the underlying cause? How can someone that has been trying to get pregnant for years, get pregnant after one or two Kinesiology sessions?
Kinesiology is beautiful in its simplicity and at the same time extremely integrated, just like the body.
You can find a list of practitioners here so that you too can experience this amazing modality.
And if this way of understanding the body makes you feel like something finally clicks, then you’re going to love what we teach, because this is just the beginning.
Our courses in Cape Town start in May. Our second intake in Joburg starts in August. Our campus in George is available anytime for intensive courses for those that dont live near a campus. And if we have enough demand we will do a second intake in Durban.
