DRY EYES

Sometimes your eyes donโ€™t make enough tears or the tears evaporate too fast because they donโ€™t have the right amount of compounds in them. This is called dry eye. Research shows that up to 5% of most people complain of some form of dry eye. Individuals who wear contact lenses or have undergone LASIK or other types of refractive surgery commonly complain of dry eye. The condition is more common in women and is more common and severe in older persons.

Dry eye may occur by itself, or the surface of the eye may be inflamed at the same time. This condition can make it harder for you to carry out certain activities such as reading for long periods or looking at a computer screen. You may also be less comfortable in dry environments.

Mild cases of dry eye may go away on their own. However, if dry eye persists and goes untreated, it can cause ulcers or scars on the surface of the eye (cornea). This can be painful and may lead to some vision loss. Permanent loss of vision from dry eye, though, is uncommon.

Why children's eye exams are important
Eye exams for children are very important to insure your child's eyes are healthy and have no vision problems that could interfere with school performance and potentially affect your child's safety.

Early eye exams also are important because children need the following visual skills that are essential for optimal learning:

Excellent visual acuity at all distances

Accurate and comfortable eye teaming skills

Accurate eye movement skills

Accurate and comfortable focusing skills

EYESTRAIN
Another of the most commonly existing eye problems, eyestrain refers to a common condition in which your eyes get tiresome and fatigued due to intense use; for instance, after looking at a computer screen (or other digital screens) for prolonged time period and driving long distances.

Eyestrain can be quite irritating sometimes, but still not capable of seriously inflicting your eyes or vision. It normally fades out after you rest your eyes and follow other ways to sooth your eyes.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF EYESTRAIN
In some instances, signs and symptoms of eyestrain point out towards other underlying eye condition(s) needing treatment. Some common symptoms of eyestrain include:

Soreness, tiredness, burning or itching in eyes

Watery or dry eyes

Headache

Blurred or double vision

High light sensitivity

Difficulty in keeping your eyes open

TREATMENT OPTIONS
Some methods commonly used by eye doctors to treat eyestrain symptoms include:

Taking frequent breaks from digital screens and reading activities.

Improving your home environment, lifestyle and work habits, thus inculcating more breaks for your eyes.

In case of dry eyes and blinking problem, your doctor might recommend artificial tears.

Natural treatments like a yoga program, visual cleansing exercises and relaxation routines to lessen stress within your eyes and head.

We are seeing increasing numbers of children who suffer with Myopia or Short-sightedness. This is a very common eye condition where you struggle to see objects that are far away.
Myopia can lead to high prescriptions and also many different other problems with the eyes.

Myopia Control has been designed for children as a way to slow down increasing prescriptions to try and prevent sight threatening complications for children in their later life.

We are passionate towards Myopia Control at Andrew Fletcher Eyecare as it involves the health and future of childrenโ€™s eyes. As a result of this we are proud to offer 3 types of Myopia Control, as we understand that all children are different and are best suited to different things.

Schedule regular eye examinations with your optometrist โ€“ at least every 24 months โ€“ to ensure early diagnosis and treatment or management of visual conditions.
Eat a healthy diet focusing on green, yellow and orange vegetables and a good serving of fruits such as strawberries, oranges and mangoes. Fish such as tuna and sardines provide omega 3โ€™s that are essential for healthy eyes.
Wear sunglasses with 100% ultraviolet (UV) protection when outdoors to prevent sun damage to the eyes.
Stop smoking. Cyanide from smoking damages eye cells and increases the risk of developing cataract, dry eyes and macular degeneration: an incurable eye condition that affects the ability to see.
Control chronic conditions. People with diabetes and high blood pressure need to be vigilant about having regular check-ups and complying with their treatment regime to avoid eye complications.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organisation in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes.

As the worldโ€™s largest diabetes awareness campaign it reaches a global audience of over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries and draws attention to diabetes related issues while keeping this condition firmly in the public and political spotlight.
