Soft-tissue injuries are very common and can be caused by many activities, often injuring the muscles, ligaments and tendons.
Soft-tissue injuries can be classified as; Sprains, Bruises, Bursitis, Strains, Tendonitis and stress injuries. So let's break these injuries down.
A sprain is when the ligament is partially torn, often caused by a twisting movement. Sprains most commonly occur in the knees, ankles or wrists. The most common treatment for a sprain is the RICE method; complete tears may require surgery.
Bruises are often caused by blunt force, injuring the soft tissue. This results in discolouring, pain and swelling. Bruises, like sprains, can be treated using the RICE method.
Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa. Bursitis is commonly caused by overuse and often affects the elbows, shoulders, ankles, feet, knees and hip. Prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs and the RICE method can be used to treat this condition.
Strains are injuries to the muscle or tendon often caused by stretching, overuse, or force. Depending on the severity of the injury, surgery may be required.
Tendonitis is the inflammation of the tendon caused by repetition and overuse. This is most common in the elbow, wrist, shoulder, hand, knee, ankle and foot. This can be treated with the RICE method and prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs. Steroid injections may be used in severe cases.
Lastly, we have stress injuries. Stress injuries or Stress Fractures are small cracks in the bone. These fractures often occur in weight-bearing bones like the legs, hips and feet. This commonly occurs from an increase in physical activity and overuse. Resting the injured area is the best treatment. Braces, inserts and casts can also assist in the healing process.
